I'm surprised that a few of you recognize the HP 41CV. I really did Jones over that crazy thing. It really helped me in Chemistry and Physics in addition to my math classes of course. I enjoyed programming in formulas, testing them, and then have them work.

Rick,
About the HP 41CV: like Doug 'I was surprised to see the photo when I opened your page', and like you 'it is the only kind of machine I have truly programmed'. Many a late/early hour was spent arranging the lines of its easy to learn macro language into useful programs. The HP 41 was not something you would write a PC application on but it taught fundamental programming and patience in regard to the functionality (or lack of) and flaws for all other software… imperfect people cannot write perfect programs.

About College: many of us would like to delve into programming and other infinite pursuits, but do not have the time. There is however something anyone could spend their time on now that could gain us lots of time later: John 17:3 (NWT). For college candidates and everyone this knowledge could give us more insight than any professor: Psalm 119:97-99. Colleges charge lots of money to teach, this knowledge is free: Matthew 10:7-8, however like things worthwhile takes some effort: James 4:8, Isaiah 55:6-7.

Appreciate your computer related tips.

Rick,

The HP 41CV is classic. I was surprised to see the photo when I opened your page. I bought one in 1986 and still use it almost everyday. HP really knew how to make equipment that lasts (or maybe I'm just lucky).

I appreciate the list you put together. It started me thinking about what my kids will need soon.

After a few years off, I've been doing some writing for Linux Magazine (which is on-line only) again recently. First off, my just published feature article is Drizzle: Rethinking the MySQL Database Kernel. As you might have guessed, it looks at Drizzle and some of the reasoning behind forking and re-working MySQL. I'm also writing a weekly column that we've been calling "Bottom of the Stack" (RSS) which started a few weeks ago.
I do believe an external hard drive for backups is essential. Or possibly an account with an online backup service.

We bought one for a friend's high school senior this year. I can't wait to get some feedback from her on it. If she doesn't use it, I told her to send it back to me. Sounds like it would be awesome technology as a college student. Good luck in school!

I will definitely take heed of this list, for I am going to college this fall. I basically have the first three items on the list taken care of. However, that Pulse SmartPen would be a very useful thing to have.
