AVG Update Error – Video Tip

AVG has been experiencing incredible growth over the past two years, and unfortunately that has translated into some occasional problems with getting updates from their servers. When you receive an update error, however, that does NOT mean you are unprotected. It simply means that you can’t get an update at that particular moment.

Watch the video below to hear and see my explanation of this issue, what it means to you, and what you should do about the AVG Update Manager error.

I just checked out the AVG Forums and an AVG engineer had this to say: “Our technology department is currently working on improving one of the main servers responsible for providing updates of AVG Free Edition. This maintenance may have, under specific circumstances, effect on availability of update files on our servers. Backup systems, which are now in charge of providing updates, may be from time to time overloaded with customer requests and we are doing our best in order to improve their function to remedy this issue. If you encounter issue with ?Update failed?, please retry in a few minutes to update AVG manually (open AVG User Interface, click the ?Update now? button).

We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause. In a week time, new improved update servers should be available.

Update: AVG technology dept. will continue working on upgrading the main server. However, the load should be balanced on other update servers. This unfortunately doesn’t clear the updates to be fully available at all times. Technology guys are doing their best to finish the works.

    Sorry for the delay. ”

TRANSLATION: The update computers are being worked on and all should be well again in about a week. Sit tight folks, no need to panic or fret.

Rick, thanks for the info via video. My Update Manager as well as Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware were red. Could not update due to message “Invalid Update Control CTF File.” Followed your example and did a “Google” using that message and found solution to Rename/Remove. Removed avginfoavi.ctf and avginfowin.ctf and then updated AVG just fine. Thanks for your help.

HI , I’M HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM. THE THING IS THAT IN AVG’S DOWNLOAD FOLDER WHERE I’M SUPPOSED TO HAVE THOSE TWO FILES , I DON’T HAVE ANYTHING. THAT FOLDER IS EMPTY EVEN IF I DO TURN ON THE OPTION FOR SEEING HIDDEN FILES. THERE’S NO HIDDEN OR SEEN FILE THERE. WHEN I TRY TO UPDATE , THE TWO FILE NAMES “AVGINFOWIN” AND THE OTHER ONE APPEAR AS IF THEY WOULD COME FROM THE UPDATE SERVER. I THINK I SHOULD CHANGE THE SERVER BUT I DON’T KNOW HOW. I’M SURE THOSE FILES COME FROM THE SERVER.

I haven’t had trouble with the update manager – I’m getting the error logo saying that my email scanner isn’t active. But everything else is green checked.

    Hello Rick,

My email scanner says it is missing components. The other day I did notice an error message with a bin file error. Not sure if it had to do my email scanner during an update, but am I still protected. I used help and could not find the help I needed. Is there something I need to do in order to get the needed components without reloading AVG again?

    thank you..

    Lisa

Then double-click the Email scanner component to see if AVG gives you any further instructions that will enable it. If not, you may need to redownload and install AVG using the repair option.

  9. Rick says:

Download a new copy of AVG from my Links & Resources section, or Download.com, then uninstall AVG using the uninstall option in your Programs menu, restart your computer, and install AVG again.
