I would definitely disable the link scanner…it is a resource hog for sure. And the email scanner is separate from the normal scan, so it will run when you have an email program open.

I have been using AVG 8.5 free and it is constantly scanning emails and the internet. At the bottem of my computer the icon for AVG shows “AVG running scans” even though I have set up the program to only scan at 1am. Is it the email scanner and link scanner that is making my computer extremely slow?

Would love to know what you think. I have done all kinds of scans and defragged.

Hello, I am wishing to completely remove every part of an old AVG 8. I have been trying to install Kaspersky Anti-Virus & Maximum Spyware Protection 2009, but it keeps showing that I have AVG 8 in my system. I deleted ever part of it that I could find, but I don’t think my computer is ever going to let me install my new software. Could you give me some advice?

Try downloading the removal tool from the AVG site by clicking here. If removing and reinstalling doesn't work, you might want to ditch AVG and try Avast or AntiVir instead.

I upgraded to AVG Free 8.5 (Windows XP, latest updated). When I click the icon nothing happens. Doesn’t open, no error message. Nothing. If I go under start and try to open it there, still nothing.

So I tried repairing it (as directed earlier in your posts), rebooted, etc. and still nothing.

I completely uninstalled it, rebooted it, kept if off for a few days, did a defrag, temp removal and reinstalled it, and got the same — it doesn’t open and no error message.

I undinstalled it for the 4th time, waited another few days, removed AVG toolbar info and other AVG info from the regedit area and then reinstalled it again. Still it doesn’t open.

Appreciate any insights.

Hmmm…check her outbox to make sure something isn’t stuck there. And you might want to try a full system scan with Malwarebytes and/or SpyBot Search & Destroy (both linked here on the site in the right hand column).

My wife’s computer started having issues where she was getting multiple copies of the same email in her sent folder, 30-50 a day.

I’ve tried running scans with AVG in both normal mode and safe mode. However the computer seems to always shut down as it’s scanning the Windows files.

There has to be a virus somewhere, but I can’t detect it. AVG is all that’s on her computer right now.

Any ideas?
