Back to work

I just got back in town a few hours ago. I have been returning calls and sifting through emails. One of the drawbacks to technology is that it makes it easier for work to stack up while you are gone.

I must, again, say how grateful I am for Cloudmark Desktop, an email spam filter that actually works. I had over 300 emails while I was gone, but only about 20 were actually worth reading. Cloudmark sifted all of the spam and none of the good stuff.

I can't figure out why more Internet service providers don't use Cloudmark to filter spam (Do you hear me ACS, Bresnan, AOL and every other ISP that uses a crappy filter that prevents the good stuff from getting through on a regular basis? I didn't think so.).

Every time I go out of town I come back with stories about how much I love my Treo. This case was no exception. While I was traveling, we were able to find nearest pizza places, addresses, phone numbers, weather and movie times. I also used it to kill time while waiting for things to happen. The phone part came in handy a few times too.

While I was in Portland on Saturday, we decided to attend the Saturday Market. The Market is a huge outdoor craft market and there were probably thousands of vendors. I was in a party of 10 people or so counting kids. I had to appreciate the wonders of technology as we all split up on several occasions and we were able to meet right back up again within a few minutes by using our cell phones.

Now that I am home I must go back to using my Treo for everyday jobs like working with clients, finding my clients addresses and tracking my schedule. Still, without my Treo, I can't imagine how crazy every day would be. I would spend at least an hour or two looking at maps, looking for phone numbers, chasing down pay phones and thumbing through a day planner. No single technology has benefited my business and daily life more than my Treo – that includes my computer and my car, either of which I could go days without using. My Treo gets used on average about once per hour while I am awake.

The software that is used by many providers including ACS does a great job of filtering spam. However, filtering out junk less than half the job in my opinion. It also must be nearly 100 percent effective at eliminating false positives. These are good messages that are filtered out because they contain buzzwords or are otherwise suspected of being spam.

A good spam filter should error on the side of caution rather than get too restrictive and prevent wanted mail. This is the problem I see with most spam filters that I almost never see with Cloudmark.

In the past four years that I have been using Cloudmark, it has filtered out less 10 or less legitimate emails.

Here is a great way to test your email filter. Have a friend send you the following message in email. Cloudmark email filtering will not sift this message out as spam.

    Dear (your name),

It is good to hear from you. Here's what I have been up to since we last talked. I have refinanced my house which includes a second mortgage. We have been looking at a nice place in Niger and it looks like winning the lottery is not an option.

Most of our savings went into my Viagra prescriptions and rolex replica watches.

With Cloudmark, this message will not get detected as spam. It could have been a real message from a friend, but other filters will sift it out as spam because it has too many buzzwords.

Cloudmark doesn't look for buzzwords, it only detects actual spam.

I think you’d spend more than a hour or two trying to track down a pay phone. Good luck trying to find one these days! They seemed to have disappeared almost completely in the last few years. I have seen a few around, and I always point them out with glee to whoever is in earshot when I do have a rare sighting.
