You DO NOT have to download CA from Bresnan

Many of my customers received the email pictured below, and didn’t fully read the email. Although, poorly worded and written in an alarmist way, it does say “Your current free version…“. Insinuating that if you are currently using their free and extremely slow security product, then you do need to update.

However, I do not recommend that Bresnan customers use this security software as I’ve found it Continue reading →

Article updated: July 2010

In 2004, spyware/adware became the #1 threat to personal computers. For a definition of spyware, visit Webopedia.

Getting rid of spyware has reached a point that it takes an expert, or a lot of persistence, to really get rid of it totally. Following is a list of steps that we frequently take to completely restore a compromised computer. Depending on the level of problems, we may omit some steps, but this list covers everything we do.

NOTE: These are not steps we recommend for every computer that has a little spyware on it. Also, some of these steps, if not performed properly, can further harm your computer. Proceed at your own risk.

ANOTHER NOTE: For a great list of Continue reading →

How I get smart using YouTube – Video Tip

This video marks my 300th offering on my YouTube channel! I like milestones, and when I hit 1,000,000 views (thank YOU) late last year, I celebrated quietly. Now with 300 videos officially published to YouTube, I am celebrating again. And what better video to create and publish than one about YouTube.

Too often folks think that YouTube is simply for kids and folks sharing wrecks, unfortunate accidents and other voyeuristic endeavors, but nothing could be further from the truth. YouTube has become one of the greatest sources of online how-to and education. Pretty much anything you want to learn about or need to accomplish can be found on YouTube. Need to know how to make pancakes, change Continue reading →

How to make Gmail & other Google Apps even more awesome – Video Tip

Inside of one of Google's offices

Inside Googleplex

I highlighted a little about Google Labs enhancements of Gmail in my award winning 3 part introduction to Gmail, but I felt that the Google Labs needed a tip all its own. Google Labs lets users of their products experiment with Google’s own experiments. Their programmers and engineers work on literally hundreds of projects every day to enhance their online offering of applications. Some of these projects make it into the application as a standard feature and some end up in the Labs section of the application. Sometimes the Lab feature might be a Continue reading →

7 ways to become a more efficient web user – Video Tip

This is a reintroduction and retitling of a previous video/tip because of a copyright infringement complaint fromFranklin Covey. Hopefully, the new title and verbiage will satisfy their legal staff.

All week long I help computer users of all ages and experience levels. Too often, I see that many computer users (beginners and experienced alike) do not utilize or know about some basic web browsing skills that will speed their work and give them less problems when using the Internet.

In this week’s tip, I will highlight the inefficient habits computer users use and replace them with tips that will make YOU a quicker and more profecient web user.

1.  Using an old browser

No matter how old your computer is or what operating system you are using, DO NOT USE INTERNET EXPLORER 6 (IE 6). IE 6 is late 20th century technology and is not compatible with much of the web today and it also poses the greatest Continue reading →

Become a web surfing pro!

SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA - OCTOBER 14: (L-R) Directo...

At this month’s computer user group meeting, I used many of the articles, tips and videos I have written over the years to highlight how any computer user can start making quicker and better use of the Internet.

Before I delve into specifics on this topic, watching and reading this tip title 7 ways to become a better web surfer, will yield you the greatest benefit if you read nothing else on this page. Do it! Now!

First and foremost, it is important to use a capable and safe web browser (the program used to view web sites). My recommendation is to use only Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome. I currently use both, but prefer Google Chrome more and more every day because of its speed.  Internet Explorer, MSN, and AOL are simply too slow and out dated to be used effectively in today’s fast paced and content rich web.

Clicking here will get you a list of all my Continue reading →

The web and email were not meant to be printable items, but we love to print many things we receive via email or the web. In this tip, I’m going to teach you how to use less paper and ink when printing AND get better looking printouts for things you do want to print.

If you combine this new tip with my Print Preview tip, my print what you want tip,  and learn how to use your printer’s draft mode (if available), and you will find yourself making less frequent trips to the store for ink and paper.

This tip is very visual, so you will learn the most by Continue reading →

How to type in your password correctly the FIRST time – Video Tip

We use passwords to log into web sites continuously through the day. Your passwords should be long and complicated, but that makes them tough to type in accurately on the first try (since password fields are masked with dots or asterisks). Or, if you are using a netbook or mobile phone, the combination of a small keyboard and longer passwords can be extremely tricky.

Save yourself some time and energy by using the power of cut and paste to accurately enter your password the first time. I prefer this method to saving my password using the browser’s password manager that automatically logs me in for three reasons: 1) It forces me Continue reading →

Fake Security Alerts & other Internet Bad Guys CAN be prevented

Security

Over the past year or so, the majority of my professional time has been digging computer users (Windows users only) out of jams where they were infiltrated by fake security software or spyware. Two things to know about this type of infection:

  1. No matter what type of security software you use and how much you paid for it, IT CANNOT PROTECT YOU IF YOU INVITE THE BAD GUY INTO YOUR COMPUTER.
  2. It is preventable.

Over the years, security and keeping computers running clean has been a common soap box for me. Listed below are just a handful of the articles you Continue reading →

Create Labels Online – Video Tip

Adam wrote about a new web service from Avery a few years ago. It’s called Create & Print labels. Avery developed this free service so that you can create quick, clean and flexible labels. The service is free and works inside your browser. Since it is a Web 2.0 application, any computer user can use it from any computer regardless of operating system.

In addition to adding many customization features like personal graphics and more pre-made designs, Avery also added the ability to mail merge. I didn’t Continue reading →
