Rick…I have a friend who has parkinson disease. Many of his nights are spent on the computer due to insomnia. His tremors are beginning to be a problem.  There’s programs out there that are voice activated, guess you command the computer and it recognizes your command or something of the kind.
How effective are those programs?  I will take your advice.
Thanks for all your help.

Doris

As a physical therapist, I know the rigors your friend is going through. I think computers and the Internet provide an excellent tool to help your friend Continue reading →

ANSWER

Thanks for writing and thanks for finding more dead links here at HelpMeRick.com. Some of the tips here date back to 1996, when I first started this site. And the site has undergone many transitions and improvements since then.

For that reason, it helps me and many others who visit the site when I get a chance to correct tips like the one you were reading. To answer your question, the Continue reading →

I have a friend who is seriously considering a switch from her Dell PC to a Mac. On a couple of  occasions you have presented some really excellent “talking points” for people who should consider using a Mac. These deal mainly with their own personal computer usage, as I recall. I pulled up all Mac reference on your website and even “googled ” – but found
nothing that really covered the subject like you did.
A review of of your comments would be appreciated and this information could be a helpful useful addition to your web site!
Now I must wait to see if I get embarrassed that the info is already posted, as you so often prove.

The download file isn’t recognized as an Application( it shows up as Unknown File Type) so I couldn’t open it once it was saved to my Desktop. Any suggestions?

Hi Rick,

I wanted to know if I can download my Vista Program to a CD from a Dial up connection? I have a Dell computer I purchased last November 08, and of course they don’t give you the disks or CD’s to have as a back up. I have tried to go to their web site but by the time I find what I’m looking for (I think) I’m usually exhausted. Therefore, I leave it and plan to try again the next day, don’t have the time and then I forget how I got there.

I’m somewhat new to all this stuff but the computer seems to be working ok. I have been able to get help through e-mail for other programs on my computer.

I had an old computer that went down on me, black screen. Nothing I did would bring it back, not that I did all that much. Purchased another one and again I started to have a lot of trouble. Long story short, I’m afraid to have anything happen to this one.

Also, would it help to get Continue reading →

I’ve been trying to loAD avg 8.5 – IT KEEPS TELLING ME THE FILE IS CORRUPT.  What am I doing wrong?  I keep trying every night because I’m on dial up.  Thanks

Answer

Hello Lauren. You reminded me to ask one more question of folks who call me with the corrupt file error when trying to download. If you are using dialup, you will never get a clean download of a file that large. Your best bet is to download AVG from a friends house or work where you can use a broadband connection. Then transfer the download to a flash drive to bring to your computer. Dialup speeds just don’t have the consistency or speed to properly piece together all that data.

Thanks for writing!
