DVD’s overtook VHS movies in sales almost three years ago. In fact, some retail outlets don’t even sell VHS tapes any more. DVD movies require less room for storage, and if taken care of properly can outlast VHS by years and the movies look as good as the first time they were played.
In addition to special features and cool extra content on the DVD about the movie, you can use your computer to unlock other great information and fun as well. Insert your favorite DVD into your computer and you can ‘unlock’ more background information about your movie, the actors, the location and more.
DVD producers (yes, that is a profession) add these extra features to entice us to buy more DVD’s. Insert your DVD into your computer’s DVD ROM and you can find desktop themes, wallpaper, screen savers, links to insider web sites and even games. Some of the extra content can be seen on your DVD player or computer in the form of ‘Easter Eggs’.
Easter Eggs are little ’surprises’ that producers/programmers hide in the midst of a DVD. For example, in last year’s Hidalgo, in the extras menu of the DVD you can watch an extra featurette by moving your selection button down and left to highlight a Native American symbol. Or in the 60th Anniversary edition of Citizen Kane, you can unlock two new interviews by fiddling a little with your remote control or mouse on it’s extra DVD menu screens.

The next time you buy or rent a DVD, make some time to investigate some of the extra features including trying the DVD out in your computer for even more content. Not all DVD’s offer computer based content, but many do. To tell for sure, the DVD jacket or cover will usually designate that the movie has DVD-ROM content. You will be surprised how much fun you can have with these features.
