My radio show co-host, Adam Cochran, sponsored a Windows 7 launch party tonight, and I helped out. We both setup our laptops and projectors and showed off some of the Windows 7 features and answered general questions about upgrading, buying new computers, what software was included, and more. We talked about the new taskbar, increased search abilities, demonstrated the Home Groups feature by sharing some folders back and forth, talked about the less intrusive User Account Control (UAC), demonstrated the snap to edge for positioning windows, the shake technique and how the system installs faster with greater driver support.
Many computer users continue to believe that Microsoft Office (more specifically Word) is included in Windows. Word has never been included as part of any Windows operating system. Instead it is part of the Microsoft Office package or can be purchased as a separate product. When I talk about this fact, many folks crinkle up their foreheads and squint in disbelief and bewilderment…but it is a fact. I try to encourage them to try OpenOffice.org or online office suites like Google Docs or Zoho.
Anyway, the launch party was fun…we hung the streamers that Microsoft sent, blew up the balloons, and had everyone sign the weird Windows 7 poster. Lots of food and drink were available for all how attended. And a huge thanks for all who made it out in the increasingly inclement weather!

I am sorry I was unable to make it to the Windows 7 party last night. Wish I could have been there, but things have been topsy-turvy here since my mother-in-law’s stroke. Sounds like the party was a blast!

I got a question for you Rick. Right now my lappy has Vista Home Premium… if I do an “upgrade” to Win7, will I experience all the performance benefits? Or would you recommend a clean install?
Because that’s probably the ONLY reason I’d goto 7. Vista works fine but at times it’s a resource HOG and I could always do with software that doesn’t devourer my battery juice like a fat man eating cake.
Love the simile (or is that a metaphor)… I just read last night that Windows 7 DOES go easier on laptop batteries than Vista. For sure it takes less resources and is much snappier than Vista. IF you have a dual core processor and at least 3GB of RAM, I would say go for it. But as with any change in OS, you will get best results with a format and reinstall versus in-place upgrade.

Good catch, Chris! Didn’t even realize the irony until you mentioned it. I’m downloading Ubuntu 9.10 as we speak and will dual boot it with Win7 on my lapper.

I did install Windows 7 recently, and I must say that I am really liking it so far.
Yes, I’m in the same boat Kyle…I really am impressed so far. Trying to figure out if it truly is impressive or that we were just so disappointed with Vista, that anything looks great?!
