AVG released version 9 of their free antivirus/antispyware product a couple of weeks ago. You may have started to see notifications from them that you need to update before December 1. Typically, they provide a deadline, but previous versions work for a number of months after the deadline.
After using the new version for awhile, it appears they did make it faster and improve the scanning speeds as well.
If you currently use a previous version of AVG, there is no need to uninstall the old version before proceeding with this one. The installation process will simply upgrade your old version.
If, however, you currently use any other antivirus product, you need to uninstall it before proceeding with this installation.
Here’s how to complete the installation:
- Download AVG here (follow the steps in the video to see proper clicks to link).
- Once the download finishes, close all open programs.
- Open the folder where you saved the AVG download and double-click it.
- When the installation window appears, click Next.
- Click the I have read… checkbox on the license agreement.
- Click Accept button.
- Next process can take a few minutes, don’t panic, Click Custom Installation when the option appears.
- Click Next.
- Click Next again.
- Click Next again.
- Click Yes.
- In the component selection, uncheck Additional installed languages.
- If you use web based email like Yahoo, Gmail, HotMail, etc, you can uncheck the Email scanner option as well.
- Click Next.
- Uncheck the Set Yahoo and Install AVG Security Toolbar options.
- Click Next and install will start and start updating automatically.
- When installation finishes, you can set the automatic scanning time and frequency.
- Click Next.
- Decide whether you want to add contribute to their threat database.
- Click Finish.
- Choose to start the scan or not directly after the scan, and you are finished!
All these steps are presented in more detail in this video…have a look!
AVG has made the full installation file download a little harder to find. As of today (May 1, 2010), here’s how to find it:

AVG free is an excellent and free anti-virus. This is a great guide that I will send to a few of my less techy friends.
After the download I get a pop up telling me to uninstall Norton. I did this when I got 8.5 Free, and it is no longer in my Control Panel. I have started the upgrade process twice, and it just quits after this pop up. What can I do?
You can try running the Norton Removal tool first…I have it linked on my Links page (see the top of this page).
I purchased AVG 9.0 antiviris they sent me a CD to install it but so far it not working and I do not know what to do and it seems AVG has no way to contact them direct to get help maybe you can help me.
Thank you Lew McClain
Here is the contact information for AVG: http://www.avg-antivirus.net/landing_page/support-info.php
So how to I download a version of AVG 9 that I can take home and install on my offline home PC to protect it from all the viruses that are presented from memory sticks that have been used in dodgy places such as University computer labs, internet cafes, friends computers etc ???
AVG 8.5 was around 70Mb, the new AVG 9 download weighs in at 870kb. Where is the rest ?
Let’s face it the whole world is NOT on line folks !!!

I, too, prefer not to download AVG from the Web every time. Since your question has not been answered yet, I will answer it for you. Here’s the URL to DL the install file:
http://free.avg.com/cz-en/download?prd=afg#tba2
This FAQ on the AVG Web site describes how to obtain definition updates for implementation offline:

Hope this helps…

Rick,
This came up during the install of 9.0.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Dave Tanner
Local machine: installation failed
Installation:
Error: Action failed for registry key HKLMSOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionWindows: creating registry key….
Access is denied.
Not sure Dave…I would uninstall all instances of AVG first…then follow all the steps from the beginning (including re-downloading AVG itself). Good luck.
Rick,
I tried your idea about uninstalling AVG n our Dell desktop to get by the download error:
Local machine: installation failed
Installation:
Error: Action failed for registry key HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows: creating registry key….
Access is denied.
The uninstall failed. Same message.
I tried the AVG support link. But, they do not provide any free support.
Also, on our Toshiba laptop, the AVG upgrade failed because of file corruption.
Plan B?
Thanks again,
Dave Tanner
Not sure why you are having trouble Dave, but here is a good plan B (click here).
Good video for installing AVG free 9.0. Shared it with a friend. Both successful. However, incoming emails no longer have the message at the bottom that it has been scanned by AVG . . . .etc. Has this been changed, or am I missing something? E-mail scanner is ‘active’ and it’s marked to scan incoming messages.
Good to hear. For some reason, AVG stopped adding that little message on all outgoing messages. You can re-enable it however, by going to the Tools –> Options in AVG. It is scanning your email, though.
THANKS! As long as it is scanning I don’t really need that extra stuff to delete before forwarding things.
Have finally had time to go through a lot of your newsletters, looking at videos of interest. Was in a hurry when I saw one about making tables in Word Processing, now I can’t find it.
You are welcome. There are two tips regarding creating tables in a word processor. Here they are: Part I and Part II
I have sent this post to all of my colleagues so that they use AVG.
Beautiful…I like to hear that kind of thing. Thanks!
I like the idea of upgrade. However, uninstalling other items bothers me. Since they always seem to leave something behind.
Now, does your following comment….
“If, however, you currently use any other antivirus product, you need to uninstall it before proceeding with this installation.”
…..apply to spotbot, and ad-aware???
Thanx much!
You are ok leaving the other antispyware products on the system…just not any other antivirus products.
Thanx Rick,
I look it all as antivirus……;)
Havea good weekend!
Rick,
I installed AVG 9 Free to find something annoying.
A new function with it is a program that runs in the background scanning your entire hard drive, building a Map of where files are located. This map is then used when it comes time to do a Scan for Viruses. Makes the virus scan run faster.
However, this mapping takes anywhere from 8 to 16 hours, robbing your CPU of performance.
I quickly uninstalled avg 9 and went back to Avira.
There is a selection to be made when doing the Custom installation that has to do with optimizing the virus scan. I have installed AVG both ways and it doesn’t make any difference.
Thanks, Rick!
I actually went out and bought AVG 8.5 a while back and was very pleased with it; when they offered to do the free online upgrade to 9, I did so– and had untold problems!
Things began running nearly as slowly as when I had dial-up, there were “red x’s” everywhere, and so on.
So I got rid of 9, put the free 8.5 back, and things were good again. I’ve read other complaints about 9, and yet I have friends who have had no problems whatsoever. Maybe the provider makes a difference?
I’m going to try 9 again, using your installation instructions– and thanks again, by the way!– and see how it goes.
You can’t upgrade from an older pay version to the free version…you will need to uninstall the old version completely before attempting to install the new free version.
I installed AVG 9 on my home computer. Now I cannot access mapped drives to that computer from my laptop. I get an error telling me there are not enought server resources available. Uninstall avg and all is well again. I am a bit confused… the free version does not have a firewall so what setting on the avg computer is blocking me from access?
Strange indeed. Not even sure where to tell you to look…maybe try posting a note on the AVG forums at http://forums.avg.com
Randy & jayson,
Have you tried “Avira” ?
PC World ranked the Free anti-virus programs as
#1 Avira
#2 Avast
#3 AVG 8.5 (Avg 9 wasn’t out yet)
Several more after the above……………
Look at my previous Post regarding system degradation. Take a look at your hard drive light after Avg 9 has been installed.
I bet it is frantically Blinking.
Only thing I don’t like about Avira is just after you boot up, a Splash screen comes on trying to get you to buy the purchased version.
Close that screen and that’s it!
A complete Avira scan of my hard drive found a couple of nasties that Avg 8.5 didn’t find.
I do like Avira and use it on of my computers. However, I’ve been reluctant to recommend it since the free version produces advertising pop-ups for the pay version at least every 24 hours which would annoy many of my clients and web visitors. It does work well and as you mentioned, fast. And for less than $40 a year, a good choice if you want to pay for protection. Thanks for the comment!
I have already installed AVG on my desktop computer; however, I didn’t know that they already have the free 9.0 version. Thanks for this update.
On free 9.0 got installation failure. Said the service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion. Am on XP. Not sure what to do???
Wish I could help, but sounds like something that I would have to see in order to help. You can also try uninstalling and reinstalling if you haven’t already.
enjoy ypou web site
Not surprised to see one of the commenters having trouble removing Norton from their system. For what ever reason, despite the fact that they remove software as theri main function, Norton just refuses to let itself be clean uninstalled without a secondary tool..
Twice now I have installed AVG 9.0 free and both times have had to unistal to be able to retrieve any Emails. Thanks AVG for the past five years with the earlier versions I now go to AVIRA
Strange problem, but I think Avira does a great job too…and maybe faster than having AVG installed IF you don’t mind the daily advertisement pop-up. Thanks for the comment.
Dear Rick
Please i need help. My computer is full with viruses but the other website say no can do! What should i do!
Thank you!
Lots of great information on the site if you just search for “remove spyware” or “computer security”. And use the quotes to focus your search. Thanks.

Thanks to your comment, I posted an addendum video to my tip showing exactly how to find the full installation file.

Thanks for the links…I now recommend Avast for XP and Microsoft Security Essentials for Vista or 7 users, but for those using AVG, this is a wonderful quick link to the full downloads of their free products.
