Some computers will refuse to go into safe mode no matter how quickly you press F8.
If you are using Windows XP, here is how to force your computer to boot up with the safe mode prompt:
- Go to START->RUN
- Type 'msconfig' into the box (without the quote marks)
- Click on the BOOT.INI tab
- Check the little box that says /SAFEBOOT
- Click Apply and OK
- Restart your computer.
To get your computer to stop booting up with the options menu, just repeat this process and uncheck the /SAFEBOOT option

Hi Rick,
I did what you said, I downloaded the video driver. The only thing is how do I actually apply it to my computer., I go into search I put the file in D20054-002-002. How do I actually fix my resolution on my computer since the new hard drive it has been different. Hope you can help.
sometimes F5 will work
What if you did that – but it still didn’t boot to safemode. Now it won’t boot to OS (as per the command), and still won’t boot to safemode…
If you can’t get into Safe Mode, your Windows installation is corrupted. You can search the site for “repair windows” which might work, but more than likely you need to reinstall Windows.
When I use F8 my windows server 2003 a black and white Raid Configuration Utility screen comes up. How can I get to the safe mode screen from there?
You need to push the f8 button sooner in the boot up process.
I cannot go into safe mode using F8, also my restore Cds I am not able to reboot from. What do you think the problem is?
Your problem could be due to a multitude of problems, and I recommend getting a tech person to sit down and troubleshoot this one for you.
Help! I have a gateway laptop that recently had a new harddrive added. I had to download the operating system and windows. I notice that the screen is blurry and unclear. Its different than it was. I tried to adjust the resolution, but it doesnt allow me to do so. Any solutions?
You are missing what is called the video driver. Go to the laptop’s manufacturer web site, find the downloads section, punch in your model number, and you will be able to download the proper driver so you can get the proper image resolution.
I was wondering if i back up my pictures and documents on a flash drive and restore my infected computer and then add back the pictures and documents can the virus get transferred from the flash drive. Any help you can give would be helpful.
Virii rarely attach themselves to data files any more. Go on as planned, and if you make sure to install your security software BEFORE transferring your data back, you will be fine.
Hope you can help me. I have a hp computer that has a virus, i decided to restore it. I went into it using F8, I clicked the button saying restore to original condition. I expected that it would of been factory restored, but i found it weird that the icons on my computer were the same and pictures and documents were never erased. I cannot go on to the internet now. This computer has a linksys wireless adapter in it. I figured that I had to reinstall it to get it configured. This is what happens when I put the cd in the drive… linksys error message saying has not passed windows logo testing to verify compatibilaty with windows xp the file “BCMWLS.SYS” on wireless G PCI adapter install disk is needed. Do you have any idea what I need to do. Please Help!! Thank you Rick for your time.
F8 does not get you into the factory restore, only the System Restore. Two different things. With your HP computer, to do a factory restore, and thus get rid of all the problems, you need to push a different key at startup (I think it is F10 or F12), then ask it to do a destructive recovery so it truly erases everything on the system before restoring. You can also accomplish the same thing by booting the computer from the Restore CD’s you made or received when you bought the machine.
Hello Rick, I went into the manufacturers web site about downloading the driver it stated that it takes about 220 minutes, does that sound normal? Do you think anything bad can happen downloading the driver. Also I notice with this computer that I can be typing then all of a sudden i will be in the beginning of the document typing over what was done. This is also one of the changes since i have gotten a new hard drive. I appreciate your help

Your word processing problem can be solved by toggling the Insert key on your keyboard.
As for the video driver, 220 minutes isn’t our of the ordinary if you are using dial-up. If you are using high speed (except for the slowest DSL), that is excessive time. If you selected the correct driver, you should not have any problems installing the new one.
Hello,
I have a laptop which I have an UB cord that I can hook up to my printer upstairs which is connected to another computer. When I try to print, I get a message saying that the communication between computer and printer is offline. That it can be because of firewalls. What do you think the problem is. Is there a way to hook up my laptop so that i can print my papers from down stairs.
