I often get calls from people who have recently moved or otherwise disconnected their computer only to find that certain features no longer work once it is all put back together.
More often than not (probably about 99.9% of the time) this is because thing
s were not put back together correctly.
There are three common problems I see as a result of mismatched cables. Typically, there are very few mistakes you can make when connecting everything to the back of a computer. However, there are a few cables that will go into the wrong port (geek for hole where you plug something in the back of your computer).
1. USB devices will fit snugly into the Ethernet port
2. Telephone (RJ11) jacks will fit easily into Ethernet (RJ45) ports.
3. The speakers and microphone jacks all look the same (speaker port sends sou
nd out while microphone sends sound in). To fix this one you must look carefully at the back of your computer.
See picture below to get to know your ports.

I have an Ethernet Connection. I use Starband.
Every time I boot up the Starband Icon is black.
I disconnect the Ethernet and re-connect and the Icon turns green.
Is there some way the computer will know the Ethernet is already connected when I start up ???
I had to have a new hard drive installed, the dispatcher also installed XP but told him I would be able to do the rest. However I can not connect to my ISP MSN (I do have hight speed), could it be possible that the local area connection was not installed from the XP installation or does that make sense as I am not an expert. Would appreciate your help..
Thanks,
Kathy
