Measure the distance of your walk, run, bike with Google Maps – Video Tip

If you are working on a new year’s resolution to walk or run more, or you just want to measure how far it was to walk from your hotel to the restaraunt, this tip is for you. There a million and one other uses for this tip as well.

The Gmaps Pedometer is an easy to use tool that a runner put together using Google Maps to be able to quickly map out distances on city streets. The creator did a remarkable job of preserving the simplicity of Google while marrying it with a useful set of tools for exercise folks and tourists. I didn’t mention it in the video, but if you are touring a foreign city and want to know why your dogs are so tired at the end of the day, pull up Gmap Pedometer to see how far you walked! It works for any city in the world.

So whether you are a runner, walker, biker, or tourist, check out how to use the Gmaps Pedomter. And if you try it out and start to use it, please leave me a comment below telling me and HMR visitors how you like it and how you use it.

  1. This is a great tool. I do a lot of driving for work and I deduct my mileage expenses from my taxes. Sometimes I forget to record my car’s odometer before I start driving. This tool will be very helpful to get the mileage after I’ve already done the driving.

If you’re trying to use it and can’t seem to get started, remember to double click on the map to set your way-points.

Thanks for letting us know about this site.

    1. Very cool! I tried it out and liked it. A little more complicated than the Gmaps Pedometer, but I’m going to keep working with it. Thanks for sharing.

  2. Hi, Rick,

I’d love to check this out – but – I’ve been unable to view videos on my MacBook for some time. Each time I try to, I get a message that “An error occurred. Try again later.” Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you! Judy

    1. Hello Judy…it sounds like your Adobe Flash player is either out dated or not functioning. Re-download and then install Adobe Flash Player from Adobe.com. Good luck.

  3. Rick, Looks interesting, seems accurate if you stick to roads. But it will not recognize the trails I use near my home. (They are paved, and shown on the Google Map.)
    Thanks

      1. Same thing for me. It doesn’t show CO River Trail routes.
But great idea. Thanks for sharing.

  4. For some reason, I cannot get the app to show on my iPhone?
I can go to the web site, but do not see a way to get it as an icon.

        1. No, sorry, as per the article and the video, it utilizes Google Maps via the Gmaps Pedometer web site…and only on a computer. Won’t work on mobile.

  5. In unincorporated Mesa County on the Redlands the only route calculator that seems to work is the straight line feature. Neither the running or bicycle feature would show any point on my route except the starting point at my house. Using straight lines is more tedious in our curvy area, but I appreciate having the calculator.

    1. Good point! Some areas aren’t mapped as well as others. You can just make many short, straight lines, to make a curve, but it is more cumbersome. Thanks for your comment!
