My hard drive enclosure saves the day again!

There are a variety of inexpensive tools that make my job easier on a daily basis. Some of these tools include the various anti-spyware programs I carry with me, my USB flash drive, and my hard drive enclosure.

A hard drive enclosure is a box that you hook a standard hard drive into that allows you to hook it up into the USB port. This turns an ordinary hard drive into an external drive.

I use my hard drive enclosure one of two ways.

I can either take the hard drive out of one computer and then place it in the enclosure to transfer data to a new computer. Or I can hook it to a working computer and place a backup hard drive into it to transfer data to another computer.

Today I helped a client move all of her data from her old laptop to her new laptop in a matter of minutes. She had over 2 gigabytes of photos and almost half of a gig of documents and PowerPoint files.

I simply took hard drive out of her old laptop and placed it in my enclosure. Next, I hooked to enclosure up to the USB port of the new computer. The computer saw the enclosure as a new drive.

From this point I was able to simply drag the files from the old drive to the new drive.

I have two hard drive enclosures, one that I use at my house and one that I carry in my car for clients who need to transfer data. It is the easiest way to get the job done and by far the fastest.
