Run spyware and anti-virus scans in safe mode

If your anti-virus finds a virus during a scan, reboot  your computer into Safe Mode (push F8 repeatedly on your keyboard when the computer starts up) and run all anti-virus scans and anti-spyware scans in Safe Mode. This will help get rid of pesky viruses and spyware.

Open Office – The FREE Office Alternative

Microsoft Office has dominated the office space (spreadsheet, word processor, presentation creation, etc). Over the recent few years, Open Office has made huge strides. Backed by Sun Microsystems and now Google as well among others, this suite of office products is poised to take off.

Open Office includes a word processor, spreadsheet, presentation manager, database program, and graphics program.

The download is huge and can take up to seven hours with dial-up Internet…so don’t attempt it unless you have a fast connection or a lot of time.

Remove Bios Password

There are two solutions to this:

Solution 1:

Try some of the backdoor passwords that are often built into the BIOS following the setups on this site.

Solution 2:

  1. Turn off and unplug the computer
  2. Open the computer and look for a flat "watch" battery on the mother board
  3. Remove this battery. You may have to gently pry it out using a small tool.
  4. Plug your computer in and turn it on without the better.
  5. Turn your computer off and reinsert the battery and turn the system back on.

You will likely have to set the time and date in your bios.

Remember to Logout from Financial Sites

Millions of computer users now bank and trade online. The convenience of online banking and trading is not disputed, but some still wonder about safety. All large banking institutions take the time and effort to shore up security from their end to protect you and your transactions. They also know that if they don’t provide the best in security that they won’t be in business very long.

However, no matter how safe our banking and trading institutions make the process, we computer users still have some responsibility as well. To insure your safety online when performing financial transactions, follow these steps:

  • Never click on links from an email that ‘appears’ to be from your bank or trading company
  • Typing the address to your bank in the address bar of your browser is the safest way to browse to your bank
  • If you use bookmarks or favorites to get your bank, verify that you are at the right site by looking carefully at the address in the address bar.
  • Always have your Windows updates current to insure that security flaws that have arisen are corrected
  • Keep your anti-virus and anti-spyware software current
  • Use the Windows Firewall at minimum or a secondary firewall if you use a broadband connection
  • Lastly, make sure you always LOG OUT of your current banking session.

Logging out of a session guarantees that the connection you created when you started your financial session is severed. All financial sites have a built-in ‘time out’ function that logs you out of your account if it does not detect activity, but why chance it. Clicking the ‘Log out” button on the web page takes no more time than clicking on the “X” and closing the window so look for it and click it for your safety.

What should I back up?

Recently, you have heard me talk a great deal about flash memory drives and there usefulness for backup. One of our listeners/newsletter readers, recently asked what files are important to backup.

So, tip number one in backup is to backup only those files that you create. These include but are not limited to:

  • Financial program data (Quicken, Money, etc)
  • Email and other address books
  • Saved email messages
  • Important word processing documents, spreadsheets and/or databases you have created
  • Calendar/appointment information
  • Digital pictures (from digital cameras AND scanners)
  • Internet favorites or bookmarks
  • Genealogy research
  • Downloaded programs or utilities (backup the original installation file)

You get the picture. Anything important to you that you have created and don’t want to lose, should be backed up.

Programs (with the exception of downloaded programs as noted above), do not need to be backed up because you can rebuild them with original installation CD’s and disks.

For even more information about backup use our site search engine to search for backup for even more specifics about backing up your important data.

Using Help

When you Click on Help and then Help Topics from most Window programs, you see this type of screen:

Don’t bother trying to look at the Contents section, it is usually time consuming and frustrating. The Index section is better, but can be fruitless as well.

The quickest way to find what you are looking for is to   Click on the Find tab in the help menu.

If it is the first time you have looked at help in this particular program you will see the following screen:

Click on the “Maximize search capabilities” option and then Click on Next. Click on Finish on the next screen, then you will see this screen:

  1. Type a keyword in the first box
  2. Select a word or phrase in the second box that matches what you are looking for
  3. Double-click on a topic in the third box to view the answer

These techniques should help you get more out of your program’s help features.

Spell Check Help

Do you find yourself having to click on the Ignore or Skip button in your spell checker more than you would like?

When you use spell check, the Ignore or Skip functions work great to skip a name or technical word you use in your industry.  However, if you want to make your spell check sessions even shorter, try this tip to allow your spell checker to learn the words you often type.

The next time your spell checker comes across an unknown word that is correctly spelled (like a person’s name or name of a place or a technical, legal, or medical word), don’t automatically click the Ignore or Skip button.  Instead, click on the Add or Learn button.

Clicking on the Learn or Add button forces your spell checking program to remember that word so that it doesn’t stop on the word the next time you use the spell checker.

If you don’t want to add a word to your spell checker’s list, you can also save time by using the Ignore All or Skip All functions when spell checking a document.

Speech Recognition Software: Talk vs. Type

I’m one of the lucky people when it comes to computers.  Why?  Because I took a typing class when I was in high school.  Learning to keyboard is an important skill that makes using the computer much easier. Learning to keyboard, however can be an uphill battle.

Fortunately, voice recognition software has come of age. Voice or speech recognition software allows you to type letters, e-mail, or any document by speaking into a microphone versus tapping on the keyboard.  In fact, I am using speech recognition software to “write” this week’s tip. The product that I am using it is from Nuance called Dragon Naturally Speaking.

Tremendous strides in processor speed and memory capacity both contribute to the newfound success of speech recognition.  Having the computer take the human voice and convert it to written word requires an incredible amount of computing power…and today’s computers deliver.

If you have trouble typing or have a disability that does not allow you to type, speech recognition may be the answer for you.  With just a little training, and some patience you can achieve speeds of greater than 100 words per minute with nearly 95% or better accuracy.

Take a look at the two premier products Dragon NaturallySpeaking and IBM ViaVoice for more information.  You can also call the show on any Saturday to ask questions about how to utilize speech recognition with your computer.
