Good Morning

My name is Emily. I do volunteer work at one of the local schools (they have no other tech support) so I have been helping them with problems. They have a Windows 2000 server with about 100 PC connected. I have a couple of questions.

1. How can I create a script to change the default power options so hard drive does not shut down after 5 minutes (this is the default) and the computer does not go into standby mode after 5 minutes? An option may be to give the users this authority as they each have their own profile but no authority to change these options.

2. The school just obtained a portable lab with about 30 laptops and the net keeps dropping - using wireless. How do I boost the signal to determine if this is the problem? Is there a limit as to how many users can sign on at one time? Any other items I should check to see why the PC are dropping? I think question #1 may have something to do with it.

3. A teachers laptop crashed on Wednesday. I did diag on the harddrive and found lots of errors (unreadable or unaccessable blocks) I cleaned off the drive (drivescrubber) and am now trying to reload and format the drive using the Windows recovery disk. The format has been running 24 hours and is only 8% complete (40 GB hard drive). Will the drive be usable if the format is taking this long? OS is Windows XP Pro.

I enjoy your hints but have not been able to join your radio program. Can you give me the link and dates of your broadcasts please.

Thanks Emily (emodav@msn.com)

Rick,

I'd like to mention that there is another fine AV product out there that I've been using for years - recently they upgraded and there product far outdoes AVG/Spybot try them out and see what you think... www.prevx.com - it's $50/year but has saved my bacon several time when *NONE* of the others could find the problem.

Also - Wordpress consulting - we do that as well. We currently run over 30 Wordpress sites, and can consult on that topic.

Good to hear your voice Rick,

Emily, I have no idea how to answer #1 except to tell you that you need a network expert. Perhaps posting the question on the community boards on Microsoft sites will get you a quick solution. For Question #2, I would suggest making sure the wireless router has updated firmware. And for your third question, scrap that hard drive and get a new one. Lastly, I answer questions every week in a video cast I post right here, but my show runs once a month live on the 3rd Wednesday of the month from Noon-1pm Mountain. Thanks.
