We had a call a couple of weeks ago about configuring ZoneAlarm , a software firewall, to allow for a home network to be setup. Often times, after setting up ZoneAlarm, network communication like sharing printers and files is blocked unless ZoneAlarm is shutdown…defeating the purpose of the firewall. Here's how to add your home network to the "Trusted Zone" in ZoneAlarm so that file and printer sharing will work with ZoneAlarm enabled:
- Double-click the ZoneAlarm icon by the clock in the system tray
- Click the Firewall option
(see #1 in the illustration)
- Click the Zones tab (see #2 in the illustration)
- Click Add (see #3 in the illustration)
- Click IP Range
- Make sure the Zone says "Trusted"
- Type in the lowest IP address on your network (like 192.168.0.100). You can find this out by RIGHT Clicking on your Wireless or LAN connection in the Network Connections found in the Control Panel)
- Type in the highest IP address on your network. Make this number about 15-20 points higher than the fourth digit of the previous number. If our example as above, then use 192.168.0.120 for this number.
- Type "Home Network" or something similar in the Description box
- Click OK
- Click Apply on the Zones screen
- Close ZoneAlarm

Hello, I have tried the “fix” to allow sharing my laptop with my home computer. I followed all the instructions to the “t”, but after I type in my IP address range and “home network” in the description box, I am not getting a bold “ok”. It is “greyed out” I can still drop my firewall completely and do anything I need, but really wanted to keep Zone Alarm running all the time. Is it possible you need the upgraded version to make these type changes work? Any help would be appreciated, Thanks
you need to type in a Description – that will then make the “OK” selectable
I had problems, too. I’m running XP on two computers with a hardwired ethernet LAN and a dial-up ISP. Everything works except the client machine (the one without the dial-up connection) cannot access the shared internet connection on the server machine (the one with the dial-up) unless ZoneAlarm on the server is turned off. I got some indication from the ZoneAlarm forums that ZAPro is required to make this work. I would like to know if this is true.
I had the earlier post and could not get zone alarm to recognize my laptop. After playing around with a few things (normally this is NOT good for me to do ha ha ) I found that if you right click in the large open space on the :zones” tab (just underneath the other listed zones that are trusted), you can add in your home network this way! For some reason using the “add” button on the bottom right of the screen would not work for me. Good luck!
Thanks for the comment. Yes, it is absolutely imperative that when following computer instructions that they are read carefully and followed exactly or the desired result will not occur.
If you enter a broad IP range as shown, are you opening the door to others like your neighbors to wander into your network? Most of my neighbors use the same ISP – won’t our IP range be similar?
