Print Folder Contents

The ability to print out the contents of a folder (directory) on your computer does not exist in Windows.

“Why would I need to print out a list of what is in my folders?”, you ask. A couple of reasons actually; 1) it can serve as a quick glance reference to your computer’s contents and 2) you might want to print a copy of file names that you backed up.

Thanks to the hard work and ingenuity of programmers everywhere, you can print out those folders’ contents. One such program is called Folder Print 3. It is a FREE utility that you can download and install to satisfy this need.

Another program that works well…maybe even easier is called the JR Directory Printer. It is a zipped file that you can download here, then extract and use. In very little time, you can be printing out folder lists with either of these tools!

If using tools isn’t your style, you can use a command prompt trick to make a list of the files in any directory then open and print that list. Here’s how:

  1. RIGHT click on the folder that you want the list of files (must be the exact folder, not a shortcut)
  2. Highlight the location of the folder, starting with the drive letter
  3. Push the Windows + R key on your keyboard (or click Start –> Run)
  4. Type:   cmd
  5. Presse Enter on the keyboard
  6. Type:  cd
  7. Press the space bar ONE time
  8. Click the small icon in the upper left hand corner of the command prompt window
  9. Click Edit –> Paste
  10. Type the name of the folder (directory)
  11. Press Enter on the keyboard
  12. Type:   dir > list.txt
  13. Presse Enter on your keyboard
  14. Type exit
  15. Presse Enter on your keyboard

Double-click on the folder you wanted the list for and you should find a “list.txt” file. This is a simple Notepad file that can be emailed or printed easily.

Print Anything You See on Your Screen – Video Tip

Many times a computer user may need the ability to print what they see on the screen, but can’t access a Print command.  Using the underutilized Print Screen button on the keyboard can rectify this situation.

The Print Screen button is usually located just to the right of your F keys and above the Insert, Home, Delete key section.

In the ol’ days of DOS, pushing this button would indeed send a paper flying out of your printer with the contents of your screen printed on it.  Today, however, when you push the button, nothing appears to happen.  Appearance is not as it always seems…your computer takes a ’snap shot’ of whatever is currently visible on the screen and stores it in the Windows Clipboard when you press the Print Screen button.

To access this ’snap shot’:

  1. Open your favorite word processor (if you are using Word, sometimes it needs to be open before you hit the Print Screen button). WordPad works great for this tips.

  2. Click Edit from the menus

  3. Click Paste from the menus

  4. Now print as you normally would via File –> Print from the menus.

If you only want to print out part of the screen,  you can either crop it in your word processing program (if the program supports that function) OR you can paste your screen shot in an image editing program or even Microsoft Paint to further modify the screen snap shot.

Go on, give it a try.  You are sure to find a use for this interesting and useful tip. Believe it or not, this function has been built into all versions of Microsoft Windows since 1995!

TIP WITHIN A TIP:  Push the Alt key plus Print Screen to capture just the ‘active window’. For example an error message box or a dialog box.

How to Remove the Greeting Card Virus

Adam and I first mentioned this nasty little virus earlier this spring on our radio show. The email that spreads it poses as an electronic greeting card from your friend or relative. Because the email is so poorly constructed, is never from a known address, and the link it displays in the body of the message is a number (NEVER, EVER Click a link that is constructed of a number, ex: http://91.188.176.15/) we didn’t put much credence in how much damage it could do.

Unfortunately, we underestimated the sentimentality of many computer users. Many saw the words “greeting card”, “friend”, and/or “relative” and common sense and computer safety went out the window. They clicked on the link which then installs the virus, and a greeting card never is seen. If you have done this, and your Internet and computer seem much slower than normal, you have the greeting card virus infection. One reason for the slowness is that part of the infection involves using your computer to send out thousands of spam messages!

Here’s how to remove the virus and restore order to your computer:

  1. Download either CCleaner or CleanUp
  2. Update your anti-virus program (hopefully you are using AVG Antivirus)
  3. Disconnect from the Internet
  4. Run which ever tool you downloaded in Step 1
  5. Disable System Restore
  6. Restart the computer in Safe Mode
  7. Search for and delete the tcpip.sys file found in the Windows folder (usually C:\Windows\System32\Drivers)
  8. Search for another tcpip.sys file on your computer (usually there is at least one backup somewhere)
  9. Copy and paste this file back into:  C:\Windows\System32\Drivers
  10. Search for and delete spooldr.exe and spooldr.sys (usually found in the Windows folder or sometimes the desktop)
  11. Run which ever tool you downloaded in Step 1 AGAIN
  12. Run a full system scan with your antivirus program
  13. Restart your computer normally
  14. Connect back to the Internet
  15. Update and run an anti-spyware program like AVG Anti-spyware, Super Anti-Spyware, SpyBot Search & Destory, etc. All these tools can be found in our Links & Resources section
  16. After all scans have finished, turn System Restore back on again.
  17. STOP Clicking on links in goofy emails…pay attention and be more discerning.

Fun with Cameroon Pet Scams

Save Up To 50% At PetCareRx

I really love English Bulldogs.

Recently I became aware of a common pet scam that is based on every other over seas Internet scam.

Someone from Cameroon posts a desired breed up for a ridiculously low price.

He/she asks for money plus shipping. You never get the dog.

Here is my recent correspondence with one such scammer.

I have resorted the posts from oldest to newest so you can enjoy the events as they occurred.

For reference, here are the photos the scammer sent with the email. Keep in mind that these are the actual size photos that were sent!

Yes, it was centered like that and no changes were made to spelling or punctuation.

Please send me your contact information. I am very very intersted in saving your baby!

Thank you,

I was 99 percent sure it was a scam, but I thought I would give them a chance.

The formatting was a little better, but everything else was identical.

My reply:

Ya. I saw all that in my sister’s email. How many dogs do you have? There were pictures of four different dogs with different markings. Do you have any larger pictures? I assume you are on a short vacation and will be coming back to Denver soon as Christ orphanage is very understaffed judging by the ads I always see on KKDNVR about their need for volunteers. I was wondering if you would be willing to trade it for a Mac p-p-p-powerbook. (I did not include this link in the actual email.)

I will gladly have one of  my friends in Cameroon pick up the dog.

Thank you,

Their reply:

i am sorry fo the ale reply,i went for evening prayers.that is all the pics i have for the puppy, and the pictures you see is the pics of 1puppy,and not different puppies.so how soon are you ready for the puppy?

My reply:

At this point I decide to really start seeing if this person will get irritated at my responces. Please note that I made up the names of breeds as well as the distinctive features of each breed.

ashley,

it is no problem. I am so glad you wrote back. Those pictures are still very small. I used my photoshop custom enlargement filter and the dog has a brown patch over the left eye in some photos but not in others. Does the patch move? Did the patch appear as he got older? You didn’t use an bleach or other chemicals to remove the spot did you? The smell of bleach bothers my cats.

The dog in the picture appears to be a southwithshire breed. Can you tell me if this is the case. If not, it may be a kanarvastshire and those are very valuable. Are you sure you only want $325? Even shouthwithshires are selling for over $3200 by private breeders. kanarvastshires are only licenced to be raised by two breeders. Does the puppy have a pink nose or black, this would really help me in knowing more about which breed it comes from. Either way I am interested, but if it’s nose in pink (inside) I will  be especially excited.

Are the pictures actual size? Have you had the puppy vaccinated against elm beetle?

Any answers will be appreciated.
Adam

Their reply:

Hello

i am just so sorry for emailing you very late,i was at a seminar, and only came back yesterday.the batch appears as she grows older. my baby is a southwithshire breed, and i am sorry you misunderstood me the $325 was for the transportation.her re homing fee is $1950.my darling has a pick nose.she  has been vaccinated against elm,re best and is currently on sorts.she will come along 1yrs health grantee.pls i will like to know how many pets you have at the moments, because my darling is so sociable with other house pets.in fact you will see that magic in her when you get her.

hope to read from you.

My Reply:

At this point I decide to make some of the same mistakes in my post as they make in theirs. Note that they were hoping that the dog would go to a good Christian home and that they work for Christ orphanage, yet she was delayed in a previous post because she was gone for evening prayers. Isn’t that strange?

No problem ashley. I am in no hurry. For a shouthwithshire I will gladly take the time to get this right. Will you be coming back to denver any time soon.
I have a few other pets but they are also very sociable.I told my family about the dog and they are  very excited. We think we may take a holiday there and pick up the dog at the same time. Is this a good time of year to visit cameroon?
Thanks,
Alvin (I decided to make a change to my name to see if they would call me on it.

Their reply:

I begin to sense that they are getting a little irritated at my wavering interest in their baby.

ok Alvin if you will come to pick her up here, then that will be very great.this is the rightful time to visit Cameroon, when you want to come do let me know,so that i can help make some reservation for you. i have close to 3months to be here in Cameroon, and the weather it really not good for the pup.so pls the earlier you come the better.

thanks.

My reply:

This should be my final message to them. At least until they get to Denver with the southwithshire.

Sorry, about that last note. It was written by my friend Alvin. He is always replying to my email. I have three other friends that often respond to my email their names are Simon, Theodore and Dave. You don’t have to reply to their messages.

I just realized that Cameroon is in AFRICA! Did you know that? I thought it was in Detroit or  something. That is too far for me to go to pickup the dog. I will wait until you get back to Denver. Let me know when you get here. Please keep your dog in doors I heard that some places in Africa catch stray dogs and put them in baby food. I would hate for you to have to utter the words – “A baby ate my dingo”

I am sure you will find another interested party in Cameroon with air conditioning.

Thank you,

Aaron

First iPhone setup

I helped setup an iPhone for the first time today. Here is a quick summary of my findings:

Pros

  • Amazingly easy setup on the Windows XP machine we installed it on. No disks or CD’s ship with the iPhone at all. The only requirement is that you have the latest version of iTunes installed. The activation and installation were SIMPLE…the way all installations should be.
  • Nice form factor. Felt like a large candy bar and had more heft (a good thing) that I anticipated. Curved edges allow for easy pocketability and feels good in your hand.
  • Amazing screen clarity and color.
  • Web looks good and the ability to switch from portrait to landscape and zoom in and out of a page all work to make it a good experience overall.
  • Synchronizes bookmarks and editing bookmarks is easy on the device.
  • Out of the box, the phone is very responsive. Very little waiting when switching between applications.
  • Large screen makes it easy for folks who use reading glasses to see and use a smart device.
  • Sound clarity seemed good on both ends of the call. Did not try a headset with it yet.

Cons

  • Cut, copy, and paste not available. This is a huge omission, in my opinion.
  • Typing isn’t nearly as fast as on a keyboard smartphone like a Treo or Blackberry, but I have to admit that it was easier and more accurate than I anticipated.
  • No one should ever use a cell phone when the drive, and the iPhone will make for some awfully distracted drivers if their owners attempt to use this device while driving except for maybe answering calls.
  • Navigating contacts is really slow. With practice, perhaps an iPhone user can access their contacts at maybe 2-3 times that of a Treo user. Even after practicing a little, it took a full 20-30 seconds or so to look up and dial a contact and you have to use both hands. On my Treo, I can perform that feat one handed in under ten seconds.
  • At this time customizing the “home screen” is not possible, and that is diappointing. Adding quick web links or frequently called numbers to the home screen would vastly improve the product.
  • No task or To Do list application.

Although impressed at the ease of setup, the seamless synchronization to Microsoft Outlook, the nice interface and presentation, I wouldn’t trade my Treo 755p for an iPhone. If Apple through a real keyboard on it, allowed cut, copy, and paste, and enabled the highest speed wireless Internet, I would only then consider it…but definitely not jump on it.

Learning a new computer

I have spent more than 10 years helping computer users get the most out of their computers. Without hesitation, I can say that the biggest obstacle any computer user encounters is change (which is precisely why I can’t figure out what Microsoft was thinking with Vista and Office
2007).
One of the most common services I provide computer users is setting up new systems. No matter how much I try and duplicate the old system, including the same icons, desktop background, port all the email addresses, etc, I always get questions for about two months that fall into one of three categories; “Why is this different?”, “Where did (fill in the blank) go?”, and “When will I get used to this new computer?”

I wonder if new car dealerships get the same questions when they sell a new car?

I’ve mentioned it many times, we don’t like change. Change makes us nervous and uneasy. When it comes to answering these questions and giving advice before I leave a customer with a new computer setup, I offer the following advice:

  • Look for the programs, icons, and other aspects of the
    computer that you DOrecognize.
  • Start off using your new computer by performing the tasks that you are most comfortable with like games or email.
  • If you run into something that looks different, take a deep breath and look again for things you recognize like the menu bar (File, Edit, View, etc) or toolbar icons like Print or Copy and Paste. Then expand from there.
  • Most things about computer aren’t necessarily new, they are just rearranged or look different. Using your past experiences with computers will help you learn the “new” system.

I made a bold statement on Saturday

Well, it was bold for me anyway. I stated (and Adam should have the audio up soon for the exact quote) that computer users who have not learned how to Copy and Paste should unplug their computers are put them on the curb for someone else to pickup.

The statement seems a little extreme and at the time, it was meant for a giggle in the context of the show. However, the more I thought about it, the more it made sense. The ability to Cut, Copy, and Paste is an extremely useful and easy to learn tool. Tutorials can be found everywhere regarding the subject (including right here on this site). I think it is an absolutely essential tool because it can be used in almost every aspect of computing except Solitaire.

You will use it with email, word processing, financial programs, Internet browsing, pictures, backup, video editing, genealogy, spreadsheets, card creation, calendars, chat, 3D chat, mapping programs, and much more. Without Copy and Paste in your tool belt, you are using you are making the computer even harder to use than it already is.

Use copy and paste to enter long passwords

One technique I use to enter long, complex passwords (which we should all be using) is to open Notepad from the Accessories menu and type the password there. Since we only see the asterisks (*) when we enter passwords, it can be extremely difficult to accurately type in some passwords with mixed case, numbers and other characters. The problem doubles when we have to enter a password two times in a row. Here's how I use the Notepad trick to circumvent this sometimes frustrating procedure:

1.  Open Notepad from the Accessories menu

2.  Type out the password and verify its accuracy

3.  Highlight the password with the mouse

4.  Copy it using your favorite method (Ctrl+C, Edit –> Copy, RIGHT click and copy, etc)

5.  Go to my web form or wireless security password box and click in the password box to get the cursor positioned there

6.  Paste the password there using your favorite method (Ctrl+V, Shift+Insert, Edit –> Paste, RIGHT Click and Paste, etc)

That's it! Remember that you can paste the password as many times as you want to until you copy something else.

Copy Shortcut for a program to other Windows’ Users

Caller, Marvin, needed to have a program he installed in his user account be available to his wife and daughter. Here's the solution:

1. Make sure that when installing a program if the program gives you the option to install to just you or all users, choose All Users.

2.  IF, that doesn't bring up the icon to the other users, RIGHT click and choose Copy on the program's icon, then Click My Computer, double-click "Shared Documents", Click Edit –> Paste. Now you can log into each of the other users, and copy that shortcut to the desktops of the other users who need access to the program.

Solution for computer that can’t change desktop wallpaper / background

This solution WILL fix your problem, but don’t run away afterwards and forget about us.

HelpMeRick.com contains hundreds of tips (and video tips) that YOU can use as a reference for yourself and
especially as a reference to send links to your friends/family so you don’t have to write out or explain the steps yourself!

I ran into this problem earlier this week and found the solution. The customer could not change his desktop background to any of the stock photos in Windows or his own photos…something that any Windows user should be able to do. Turns out that the root cause of the problem is spyware. Even after removing the spyware a registry (skeleton of Windows) entry gets left behind disabling the users ability to change the background. Deleting this entry restores the ability for the user to again have a normal functioning desktop.

WARNING: THIS SOLUTION IS ONLY FOR COMPUTERS THAT HAVE THIS SPECIFIC PROBLEM. AND IT IS INTENDED TO ONLY BE CARRIED OUT BY AN EXPERIENCED TECHNICIAN OR COMPUTER USER WITH REGISTRY EXPERIENCE.

  1. Click Start
  2. Click Run
  3. Type: regedit
  4. Navigate to the following registry entry: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System

“Wallpaper”=SZ:C:\WINDOWS\desktop.html (yours might be slightly different)

  5. Click one time on the entry
  6. Push Delete on the keyboard
  7. Click Yes
  8. Close the Registry editor

HOW TO MAKE YOUR ICON TEXT TRANSPARENT:

1. Open the Control Panel

2. Click System

3. Click the Advanced tab

4. Click Settings in the Performance section

5. Check the “Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop” check box

6. Click OK until you close the windows
