CES 2008 - early press releases reveal the mundane
I have begun reading through the pre-CES press releases that we get each year before the January event.
The Consumer Electronics Show is the largest trade show/convention in the US. This is the event that many of the biggest electronics manufacturers choose to make their big announcements for the year to come. Many of the products that we see at CES are not released to consumers for months, years or - in some cases - never.
By far, the revolutionary products are out numbered by bad ideas and poor concepts.
We see companies pour what is likely all of their VC funding into this single event.
We love the bad ideas - here are a few from years past:
MoGo X54 Mouse Review - CES 2007 Update
It is always exciting to see all of the wonderful new toys at CES. Most of the items we see that impress us are things that we will never be able to afford. And if we could afford them, we honestly can't say that is how we would choose to spend our money.
We see speakers that are $25,000 per pair, huge TVs that cost twice as much as any car we drive, and computer systems that could double as a mission control.
All of these things are impressive, but what really impresses us are simple ideas that are affordable and we think will actually make a difference to the average technology user.
How to watch our VIDEOS
Throughout CES I recorded a number of videos, many of which I have yet to post.
You can see which videos I have posted by clicking on any of the links under CES Video Reports in the right hand bar of any page on HelpMeRick.com.
Once the page opens click the PLAY link under the description and the video will open and play.
Running behind
I tried all day yesterday to find time to sit down and talk about what I have been up to, but we have been up against the clock the whole time for press meetings and conferences. Yesterday we saw the new ASIMO from Honda. He's the human-like robot that Honda uses as a PR tool to get everyone excited about their company.
ASIMO is now able to "run" and dance. We have seen ASIMO the past few years, but Andy took over 40 pictures of him, he was so impressed. We will add those pictures to his online album when we get back.
Andy's CES photo album
Andy built a Picasa album for all of his CES pictures. I went through and took out some of the photos of the attractive CES staff, but otherwise this is most of the pictures he has taken over the past couple of days. More will be added as we can add them.
I didn't realize this earlier, but it looks like Picasa wants you to sign up for a free account before you can view the pictures. Go ahead. It's free and they won't sell your information. They don't really even need anything personal, just a user name and password.
SanDisk press conference
We are in the SanDisk press conference right now. They gave each of us a 1GB MP3 player just for attending.
They are announcing their new 32GB hard drive for laptops right now. They showed a demonstration of two laptops on a shaking table with what looked like a seismometer attached to show the stability of the drive.
SanDisk will also announce some new USBTV devices and more. Hopefully this link still works so you can see the type of exciting things we see every day .
You may need to use Internet Explorer to watch the video.
CES 2007's first 'Wow!' moment
We loved the little physics game controller last night, but our first WOW! moment came from Philips of all people.
Phillips it taking their current Ambi Light technology (colored light that glows around the border of the TV) to the next level.
A new set of surround sound speakers will also come with lights on the top of the speakers and a fan. The lights will glow along with whatever is happening in the game or movie and the fan will blow according to the action.
The coolest thing Phillips showed off was a ne 2-speaker surround sound system that actually works. They gave a demo to a room of about 500 people and it was amazing!
Think Geek
Here is the Bargain Site for Saturday March 11th 2006. The site is called "Think Geek". This general bargain site is mostly geek and gadget related . It has some unique items and some bargain prices but, you need to look through the site carefully. The site has geek toys, gadgets, computer items and electronics. I always wanted an Albert Einstein figure (lol).http://www.thinkgeek.com/
