Presumably, you want to test your fax machine by sending a fax from it and receiving a fax with it. Here?s how to do both:
To test the send functionality of your fax machine, send a one-page fax to 1-510-545-0990 (a number in Northern California.) When it?s finished transmitting, point your web browser to Fax Toy http://faxtoy.net/ ? it?s a fun web site that displays whatever is faxed to that number. Within a minute, your fax should appear on the site. Click the thumbnail to see a large version.
To test the receive functionality of your fax machine, point your web browser to FaxZero: http://faxzero.com/ this site lets you send faxes for free to anywhere in the United States and Canada. Within a few minutes, your fax machine should ring ? hopefully, it will automatically answer and spit out the test fax.

I have a Brother MFC-9840CDW, and I just tested it with the HP test fax line, and it worked!
The HP test fax line worked perfectly with my Brother MFC-9840CDW.
The HP site is automatic; works off caller ID. So if you can’t send out a fax on the same exact number (distinctive ring, for example), then use the Interpage.net site. There you can submit any fax number you wish. However, it doesn’t test your outgoing fax like the HP site does.

this comments thread is amazing. people read a blog post with a link to a fax service, then they think that by typing “test” in the comments of that blog, they will magically receive said fax to their unspecified fax number. Or they seem to expect the blog to provide the service itself — as if the link was not there.
I imagine some must have talked into their mouse and said “send fax dammit!”
Does anyone know if there is a uk version of this test?

GotFreeFax.com is another website that allows user to send free fax online to the US and Canada. User can either upload a PDF/Word file or enter text to fax. It does not add Ads to user’s fax, which makes it suitable for faxing formal documents.

Thanks, I bought a Brother MFC-5460 on ebay as parts or repair with no manual and was winging it-simply had the line in the wrong spot, lol. It sent finally! Thank you for the quick response, I would have took it as junk on the fax part.
try plugging the phone cord into another jack in the back of the fax machine (if there is one) and the fax should go through
