It wasn’t long after I bought my first computer that my wife noticed an unspoken truth about technology – gadgets yield more gadgets.
When you buy a computer, you also need a printer, monitor, scanner, power supply, software, digital cameras, etc., etc.
While there are a few extras that you need when it comes to digital photography if you get the right accessories right from the start you will likely not need to buy anything else for the life of the camera.
Some accessories will be obvious such as a camera bag, rechargeable batteries, and memory cards. There are three accessories that will make you a better photographer that many people don’t have.
1. A mini tripod – I love the Ultrapod. It is a solid little tripod that you can strap to almost any stationary object for a steady shot.
2. An extra set of lithium batteries. You should have extra rechargeable batteries, but rechargeable’s can wear down faster as they sit out of the charger. Temperature can also have a drastic effect on the lifespan of rechargeables. If your camera takes AA batteries, consider carrying a set of lithium batteries. Lithiums have a long shelf life and the work well in all temperatures. Lithium batteries are great when your rechargeables fail you.
3. This last one isn’t technically an accessory and it doesn’t cost anything. Picasa is a free program from Google. It searches your entire hard drive for all digital photos and catalogs them without moving or changing them. Picasa makes moving photos from your camera to your computer extremely easy. It also gives you the ability to backup all of your photos on to CD or DVD. Picasa even gives you the option to make a great little slideshow gift CD or DVD.
Adobe Photoshop Elements is best for heavy lifting when it comes to altering photos, but I use Picasa for tracking my pictures, backing them up and looking at them.
With these three accessories you will be able to take better pictures, always have the shot ready and be able to find and enjoy your computers once you have transferred them to your computer.
