Windows 7 will run XP programs; virtually

I don’t know whether to put this in the win or lose column for Windows users who need to run XP software on a newer computer. This announcement (see link below) indicates that in order to run a program designed for Windows XP, the user will have to invoke Windows XP Mode. The implementation of XP Mode occurs in a virtual machine (VM).

Large companies and research companies use VM software all the time to simulate different computing situations and operating systems. Whether Microsoft makes this a truly accessible implementation for the masses will be interesting. Many businesses have not upgraded to Vista because of incompatibility problems with custom software built under XP.

Also this week, Microsoft confirmed that the first release candidate (RC1) of Windows 7 will start to be available on April 30. In real people talk, a RC refers to a product that is almost ready for retail or wide spread use. Typically companies will only put out 2-3 RCs before releasing the final product. This indicates that Windows 7 should be out before the end of the year.

Windows 7 gets virtual ‘XP mode’.

  1. I am trying to download a trial version of Windows 7 and not having any luck. Could you send me to a site that I may download a 60 -90 day trial?

    • From what I can tell Matt, there is not trial version of Windows 7. During the beta period, you could download and try out the test versions, but I can’t see where there is trial of the full released version. If you or anyone finds one, let me know.l
