Windows 8 Basic Navigation and Customization – Video Tip

Today’s tip centers around the biggest changes in Microsoft’s newest version of Windows; Windows 8. To say it is different than anything we have seen before from them is a huge understatement. You really have to see it to believe it. In my video tip below, I discuss:

  • The new start screen interface (Metro) basics
  • How to get to a familiar desktop
  • How to customize the new start screen: add, remove, change, and move tiles
  • Introduction to Charms
  • How to get out of an open Windows 8 app or settings screen (spoiler: there is NO big Red X to click)
  • Introduction to new ribbonized File Explorer (used to be called Windows Explorer)
  • And much more…have a look!

  1. Rick, Has microsft announced a stop date for supporting XP ? i’ll probably need to get a new machine then and i’ll need to know how to save my stuff to the new one? You are on that right?

    1. Thanks for writing! According to Microsoft’s site, the end date is August of 2014. However, XP has been mostly dead to Microsoft since 2009 (again refer to the link). Functionally, use your XP machine until it no longer does what you want it to do. And yes, I am always on the tech stuff. 😉

  2. I found that the control panel charm leaves for some strange reason every now & then. I’ve found it best to go to desktop, pointer in lower left corner, the start menu will pop up, just right click and a whole bunch of system maintenance items will pop up. Control panel seems to usually(if there is anything usual in 8) be 5th. from bottom.

  3. Re those screens that you ‘can’t get rid of’

On Windows 8 touchscreen, you get rid of them by swiping from the top of the screen down with a finger.
