Are you missing the Menu bar in Internet Explorer 7?

Are you missing the Menu bar in Internet Explorer 7?

IE 7 Menu BarActually, Microsoft designed the new browser that way so that there is more room for browsing. However, if you want the menu bar (the one with File, Edit, View, Favorites, etc) back, follow these steps:

  1. Start Internet Explorer
  2. Press and release the Alt key on your keyboard
  3. The menu bar will be visible, Click the View menu option
  4. Click Toolbars
  5. Click Menu Bar

That will do it. You can't move the menu bar above the new address bar, but at least it will be visible and usable from now forward. For those of you who just want quick access to the menu bar, but don't mind that it is missing, remember the Alt key trick to get the menu bar to appear when you need it.

try that and my tip about resetting Internet Explorer. OR, you could scrap IE altogether, and use Firefox!

  2. Rick says:

Remember that I still recommend Firefox for browsing the Internet, but for these kinds of problems with Internet Explorer, try following the steps found in my tip here:

Fix some Internet Explorer 7 Problems

Sorry but that simple tip does not work. -getting a bit tired of MS pushing products that differ just a bit too much from welll proven standards.

    …’default missing menubars’,…wtf is next!?

I’ve tried the ALT and I’ve tried right clicking. The only option I get is to restore, minimize, maximize and close. this is bull!

I have a problem that “alt” key doesn’t fix — no address bar at all! Total crap!

  6. Rick says:

The tip works PERFECTLY as advertised. Please carefully read and execute the steps for success. You can also try RIGHT clicking on a blank part of the toolbar then choose Menu bar from the options as an alternative. Or, you can click the Tools option from the right side of the screen and choose Menu bar. All three work perfectly. We guarantee the steps in our tips, not the execution of the steps.

Do you have other toolbars? My Menu Bar was not displaying despite the option being checked. I tried unchecking it and checking again and that didn’t help. I finally unchecked the Windows Live Toolbar and magically the Menu Bar came back. I suppose that the Windows Live Toolbar was somehow displaying over top of the Menu Bar. You may have to try with all other toolbars you may have installed.

    I hope that helps

Nice tip! When I upgraded to IE7, I had three or four toolbars show up by default (Yahoo, Adobe, etc…). I never thought to turn them off until I saw this tip. The alt button toggling is really handy.

I also found the “full screen” function while messing around with this. That led me to look for “full screen” in my other two browsers (Opera and Firefox) and play with them. IE is by far my least favorite browser, but I have to admit that I like the full screen function of IE better than the others – easier and quicker to use.

Nope, None of those three steps are working for me. In fact, I can’t even ‘un-select’ the menu bar yet the menu still won’t appear. I am using a brand new Sony Vaio with Vista OS. Could Vista be the problem? Anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks.

Try this. Try right-clicking on the menu bar and clicking “Links”. For me, this unlocked the “Menu Bar” checkmark. Then I turned off the “Links” and was able to bring the “Menu Bar” back on.

    Nice on, Mr.Smartypants :)

That finally worked. Seems to be an annoying bug in IE, and that’s the only thing I’ve seen so far that works.

Yeah, the previously stated fix (right click bar, select links, right claick links, select menu bar) is the only fix that works on my brand new vista computer. Running IE7 on my old XP gave me no such problems, but vista spontaniously starts to have this problem when I open many (15+) tabs. I sure hope they come out with a fix soon!

Any explination why 3rd party toolbars dissapear and reappear? I rely on the Adobe Acrobat Pro v6 toolbar to convert web pages to pdf’s. Using the tip above to make the toolbar visable only works sometimes…. any ideas?

I’ve uninstalled and reinstalled IE7 several times to no avail. I still have no menu bar whatsoever, no matter what key I press (F11, Alt, Control, etc etc etc). I’ve tried the hotfix and editing the registry to include the:

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar\WebBrowser]
    “ITBar7Position”=dword:00000001

And still nothing. I have no third party toolbars or applications. The “xmllite.dll” and “ieui.dll” are both in the System32 folder. Right clicking or left clicking anywhere near where the menu bar should be does absolutely nothing. I have un-labeled buttons for back/forward, refresh, stop, and the search bar… and that’s it.

I have to use IE for one website that I need to visit on a regular basis because it uses iframes, but otherwise I’ve totally lost faith in Internet Explorer and started using Firefox instead.

I actually prefer IE over other browsers, but it won’t work!

  15. Anonymous says:

Have you found a solution to that yet… I’m having the exact same problem.

Perhaps the problem is the keyboard. Some wireless models have messed with the “f” keys, and they may not be working correctly for you. You may have to restore the functions.

  17. Rick says:

Depends entirely on your email program you use. First place to look, however, is the Preferences or Options of your program and then the “Read” or “Receive” section.

How do I convert back to normal view? Hard to read html.

  19. Anonymous says:

    press f11

  20. Anonymous says:

Go to the tools bar and unclick Full Screen and the toolbars magically appear

  21. Anonymous says:

THANK YOU SO MUCH , THAT WORKED!!!!

  22. Anonymous says:

This is my email program…and also use gmail, they both come in html sometimes. Found Options, no read, or recieve in windows live.

  23. Rick says:

Web based mail generally has fewer options than using a program like Outlook Express or Thunderbird. Windows Live Mail (HotMail) options are extremely limited. If you didn’t see it there, then you can’t do it.

  24. Anonymous says:

Tried the method above and it worked:

Try right-clicking on the IE7 bar that displays the “home” icon and then tick “Links”. This will then display the Menu Bar. Now you can untick the “Links” and the menu bar should stay displayed – or you can go to tools and tick it to display it.

    Kind regards

  25. Anonymous says:

thank you very much, been trying to fix this all day!

  26. Anonymous says:

    Awesome – it worked. Thanks!

  27. Anonymous says:

I tried the registry fixes and just about everything else, but this did the trick! Thanks!

  28. Anonymous says:

yes that woprked a treat after ,alware messed the browser, thanks, showing links and then checking the menu bar again worked !

  29. Anonymous says:

In my case, i had the same problem of no menu bar. When i right clicked on the tool bar, it showed that the menu bar was checked. I could not uncheck it either, it remained checked no matter what i did; and still no menu bar.

Due to this post, i right-clicked on the tool bar, clicked ‘links’, and the ‘links’ bar appeared, but best of all the ‘menu bar’ item was now unchecked!

I then right-clicked, clicked ‘menu bar’ to check it, clicked ‘links’ to uncheck it, and finally got what i wanted: the menu bar to appear.

This was a lot harder than it should be; it boggles the mind…

  30. Anonymous says:

Thanks! I had the exact same problem! Yes so many steps to such a simple thing… Thank you!

  31. Anonymous says:

I had the same problem: no menu bar, menu bar button was checked and couldn’t be unchecked, alt key suddenly didn’t work anymore, Vista “organize” button didn’t (still doesn’t) exist, right clicking on anything wouldn’t bring up “links.” Finally, I right clicked on the little house (home) icon on the bottom right of the tool bar and got access to the “links” selection. I selected it, then deselected menu bar and was back to normal. Perfectly logical and intuitive, right?

My menu bar often ‘greys out’, all text is greyed out and clicking file, view, favorites, etc. does nothing. Minimizing and maxinizing the browser brings them all back, but it’s driving me crazy!
