If you can at all help it, I still recommend waiting to buy a new computer until later this year. Unless you are willing to move to Ubuntu or a Mac. The reason being that more and more evidence is pointing to a fall release of Windows 7…Microsoft’s next Widnows release.

I hear that the beta version of Windows 7 is running well (i.e. faster than Vista) on old XP-type equipment, so maybe MS has learned something from Linux. IF that’s true, some of us should be able to go from XP to Win7 without new computers.
I would stay with XP for now on those machines, but yes, I’ve been testing Windows 7 and it is light years faster than Vista. Still requires a lot of RAM though.
Rick,
Last month my motherboard quit and went home, but left the processor…
I went with a ‘barebones’ system from tigerdirect.com.
A mistake I hope never to repeat because this system was designed by some guy in the warehouse that had stuff to move out the door.
Back to my immediate problem.
I decided on vista home premium 64 bit to support the max 8GIG on the MB. Another mistake not to be repeated…..
Now, I have a lot of programs on the old drive that I want to migrate to the new machine but…
Vista has decided that in order for me to do this, I have to rebuild the old machine to prepare the files to be moved.
I am looking for a replacement MB for that machine, but 3 year old technology is hard to find.
Any ideas on how to solve this predicament?
I have the old drive hooked up as an external USB drive and can read and write to it.
I also have a 160 GIG drive that I intend to install UBUNTU on, IF that is the best version of LINUX currently available.
Any help is, as always, greatly appreciated.
Drew
I would never recommend moving programs from one computer to another, let alone from one OS to another. Cut your losses, backup your data, then reinstall the programs you need on the new system. I like Ubuntu for Linux because it has a lot of momentum behind it and a large community for support.
Of course it won’t happen…. but I wish MS would give current Vista users a HUGE discount to upgrade to W7… at a matching level; W7 Home for current Vista Home Premium, etc…
Funny you say that, because there is speculation that upgrade prices could be a little less because users are still generally happy with XP, and pressures from free OS like Ubuntu.
