Easy to understand explanation of Twitter

Twitter news stories occur almost daily these days. Do you know what Twitter is? Do you use Twitter? Do you understand Twitter?

I didn’t…initially, but now I have grown to really enjoy and benefit from the service. I ran across this short video today from Common Craft which explains Twitter in an easy to understand format. Have a look at the video and then let me know if you understand Twitter better after watching it by leaving a comment below.

  1. Thanks for posting this.
I had a general understanding of Twitter, but thought it was a bit of a vanity thing. Really, who wants to know that I just commented on Rick’s blog?
This video brought it a bit more in focus, especially if you share twitters of uncommon things that are important to you.

  2. More and more I am seeing less and less privacy. Much of it, like Twitter, is by individual choice. For me it often feels very intrusive. Seems some people can’t be by themselves for even a minute. So it was nice to get a simple explanation and understanding of Twitter and thanks to Rick, but no thanks to Twitter.

    1. You are welcome. I think privacy is much less than it used to be…but it is by choice. For people like me, we NEED our privacy to be invaded a little to increase traffic to our sites. People seem to welcome a little personal knowledge from the folks they derive help or info.

  3. The video helped but I still have a lot of questions. Will every “Tweet” go to everyone on my account? Whether I want it to or not? I am a contented Introvert but there are occasional times when I would like to send a quick comment or question to a single person. I already use email a LOT and get irritated with people who phone me (long conversations) instead of emailing me. I am home 90% of the time. I have a cell phone but I don’t text or receive email on it. Do you think Twitter would be something that I would like? Thanks so much.

    1. Twitter allows you to follow others and others to follow you, without privacy. Everything you Tweet will be seen buy anyone who has subscribed to your messages. Also, if I understand Twitter correctly, anyone who searches for you will be able to see your Tweets as well, even if they are not subscribed to your messages. You have no control over who can view your Tweets and you can’t block them. All you can do is not Tweet.

    2. You can send a direct message to people on Twitter…but that would be about the same as a text message or short email. The service is meant to be a little more general and to share info with others in your “group”.
