Internet Explorer 7 - Tabbed Browsing - Video Tip

I posted this article nearly 2 years ago, but with the release of Google's Chrome browser yesterday, I thought it was appropriate to bring this important tip back to the forefront again. Also, read my tip on the new Firefox 3 browser released earlier this summer.

I have downloaded and tried out the new Google Chrome browser and look for a video and more comment about it coming up soon.

Windows XP users will all have to deal the upgrade to Internet Explorer 7. ..eventually. Microsoft released the upgrade three weeks ago and has started to roll it out as an automatic Windows Update. Since this is the first new release of Internet Explorer in more than five years, a lot has changed. Microsoft promises that it is safer, easier to use, and more flexible than ever. We will see about the first claim in weeks to come, but with a little help, it will be easier to use and more flexible. Overall, we still highly recommend using the Mozilla Firefox browser which also released a new version last month, but if you want to stick with Internet Explorer, moving to version 7 is worth the work.

One of the biggest additions to the new Internet Explorer is 'tabbed browsing'. An unbelievable feature that you will wonder how you did without once you start using it. Tabbed browsing was first introduced by the lesser known Opera browser, and brought fully to life with Firefox. Tabbed browsing allows you to open multiple Internet windows without cluttering your taskbar and makes them easy to find with easy to read tabs in your window.

Explaining tabs is difficult, so instead, watch the short video tutorial (click Read More if the video isn't visible) that I have put together for you explaining what tabs are and how to use them in Internet Explorer 7.

Vista can run faster if you...

I just finished my normal Sunday morning routine of breakfast with the Sunday paper. I always peruse the Sunday high tech ads to keep tabs on prices. Computer prices continue to drop (and I still think manufacturers are getting a kick back from Microsoft) to help spur sluggish sales.

However, the past few weeks, I picked up on another trend; increased RAM.

In this week's big 4 ads (Office Depot, Office Max, Circuit City, and Best Buy), there were 43 desktop and laptop ads. Out of these 43 systems, only one of them had

RocketDock for Windows XP and Vista - Video Tip

Submitted by Rick on July 15, 2008 - 10:27pm.
  • Windows Tips

Windows Vista stripped out the ability to make an easy quick access toolbar to your most used files and programs. I posted a video last year on how you can make such a toolbar, but it certainly isn't as straight forward as it was in XP.

In my quest to find an easier way, I ran across two program, RocketDock and ObjectDock. I tried them both out and ended up liking the RocketDock a little better. Both are free and work well, and for $20 you can get even more features for ObjectDock.

If you like easy, quick access to your most frequently used programs and files, give RocketDock a try.

Windows XP Service Pack 3

Microsoft released the 3rd service pack for Windows XP about three months ago. Microsoft packages many operating system updates and fixes into one large package and then releases it as a service pack. Because these are extremely large files that apply many updates and changes to our systems, they can sometimes have trouble.

Small and Free Utility Software Gems

Those of you who have kept up with me over the years know that I'm not a utility junkie. The fewer utilities and installed programs the better for me.

That being said, I admire and cherish great utilities that serve purposes I need. Some of my favorites over the years include Tech Smith's Snag It screen capture tool and Camtasia which I use to create our video tips. I also am never without a desktop tape calculator. My current favorite is the Moffsoft Tape Calculator.

Right-click: Properties - VIDEO TIP

People always ask about the difference between right-click and left-click. The primary difference is that the right-click always brings up a menu called the context menu.

The items on the context menu change depending on where on the screen you click the mouse.

The video explains the importance of the Properties option on the context menu.

What version do I have?

One of the first questions tech support people will ask you if you have problems that need solved is what version of Windows you are using and what version of the program you have a question about you are using. Fortunately, finding out the answer takes just a few steps:

Locating your Windows version

  1. Click Start
  2. RIGHT Click the My Computer icon (or Computer icon)
  3. Click Properties
  4. The System Properties screen appears telling you not only what version of Windows you are using, but also how much RAM (temporary memory) you have and how fast your computer's processor is.

or, you can push the Windows key + the Pause/Break key on your keyboard to get the same screen

Locating the name and version of any program

  1. Start any program
  2. Click Help from the menus in that program
  3. Click About
  4. The program's information screen will appear telling you the official name of the program, its version number, and sometimes the programs support web site address and/or phone number.

Use this handy tip to gather important information about your computer before calling for help to save yourself and your computer helper time.

Use Alt+Tab or Command(Apple)+Tab to quickly change applications - Video Tip

Submitted by Rick on April 3, 2008 - 6:54pm.

  • Ubuntu Tips
  • Windows Tips

Thanks to long time listener and web visitor, Daniel, for suggesting this week's tip. I have been using this technique for more than ten years, but in order to learn it, you really must see it in action. Thus, it was a natural for our Video Tips, which are now almost 18 months old!

For Ubuntu and Windows users, you can quickly switch between open programs by pushing Alt+Tab on your keyboard. Macintosh users have a key called the "Command" key on their keyboards. By holding down the Command+Tab key, Mac users can switch between their open programs.

Why use the keyboard instead of your mouse? Time. I didn't run any official tests, but I'm willing to bet that it takes at least three times longer to look at your task bar or dock (how many of you know what that is?), hunt for the application you need to switch to, then click on that program than it does to use the Alt+Tab or Command(Apple key)+Tab technique.

I know this doesn't make much sense reading it, so click the play button on the video below and watch it in action! I show the Windows technique first, Ubuntu second, and end with the Macintosh tip. All told it's about 2.5 minutes...2.5 minutes that WILL change your computing life. Pass this tip on to ALL of your computer buddies.

Vista Service Pack 1 - Don't do it....yet

Microsoft released the first service pack (major upgrade) to the barely one year old Vista this week. In fact, the Service Pack has been in the works almost since Vista was released last year. You will see and read it being referred to as Vista SP1.

Microsoft missed the mark so badly with Vista that the company had to immediately go back to work in trying to improve an already mediocre release.

Should you upgrade to SP1?

No!   At least don't upgrade for the

Dude! Where's my icons? What to do when all your desktop icons disappear

Submitted by Adam on March 6, 2008 - 10:57am.

All your icons are gone off of your desktop and you can't bring them back.

It's an easy fix:

1. Right-click on your desktop
2. Click Arrange Icons By (or something similar depending on your version of Windows)
3. Click Show Desktop Icons

Wait a few seconds and all of your icons will come back. If they don't you should get a Mac or Ubuntu computer.
