HP Director won’t open

Yesterday, I ran across a customer with an HP All-in-one printer that would not pull up the HP Director software that controls the copy, scan and fax processes. Turns out that the problem occurred shortly after his system updated to the new Internet Explorer 7. Because so much software uses Internet Explorer in some fashion, the update causes problems for some of them and this was the case with HP Director. HP has come out with a fix, but you have to be able to HP Director up and running in order to click on it's update feature.

Here's how to get HP Director up and running:

  1. Double-click the HP Director icon. Do not click anything else on your screen until Step 2 is completed.
  2. Press the Alt key and the Space bar together on your keyboard and Click Minimize from the menu that displays in the upper left corner of the window. If necessary, click it again until HP Director minimizes.
The HP Director software should now appear as an item on the Task Bar.
  3. Click HP Director on the Task Bar. The software opens and displays normally.
  4. Repeat the steps above each time the HP Director software is used.

This is a workaround posted on HP's web site. Once you do get the HP Director running, click the "Check for updates" icon on it and download the available updates. It will take a few moments and then ask you to restart your computer, but when it does, all will be well again with HP Director.

Cannot get HP Director to open…I double click on it, get the little hourglass for about a second, then nothing. When I right click and click open, still nothing happens. What now???

For those of you who used this temporary fix, look for a "Check for updates icon". Some versions don't have that as a choice, but can find an update link under either Tools or Help. The second option is to download HP's newer software called: HP Solution Center . You need to download it to your desktop (240 megabyte download…don't attempt with dial-up), unplug your scanner, then install the software.

If you can't get the workaround to work, you might want to sit tight a week or so more and HP should have the permanent fix out by then.

    Step1: double click Director.
Step2: don’t press a thing then press alt and spacebar at the same time
Step3: Click Minimize and it should be on the taskbar
Step3: click it on the taskbar
Stap4: There is none it opens!

I got the director to load but when I clicked on “check for updates” I received “the program encountered an error and is unable to proceed” message. Also received “The computer this program communicates with for update information is available but did not respond as expected”

    Didn’t expect that. Now what?

The above workaround does work if you follow the steps as advertised. However, with the many different configurations of hardware and versions of HP Director, I recognize that some systems will still have problems. You could uninstall Internet Explorer 7 via Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel, but that is a short term solution since the IE 7 update is eventually necessary.

Instead, you could try downloading and installing the new HP Solution Center which is replacing the HP Director. It is a 240mb download.
DO NOT ATTEMPT WITH A DIAL-UP CONNECTION.

It takes some time even on a broadband connection. Click here to get it.

After hours upon hours of frustration with this problem I:

    1. Downloaded the firmware update from HP’s site, followed the directions and updated my Officejet 9110.

    2. I took Rick’s advice from this website and downloaded and installed the HP Solution Center from the link he provided and for which I am very grateful

I now am in the possession of what seems like a brand new all-in-one with improved features and faster response. It seems like only the box is the same. If you go on HP’s site you will discover that thousands of people are ready to toss these machines out of frustration. Here is the final solution and it works.
