Lately, I have showed many people how easy, not to mention vital, it is to backup your digital photos. When a computer crashes, the first thing the computer user does is panic…unless they have a good backup routine.
With photos, there is no easier, safer way to backup than using Picasa. Picasa is a free photo management utility from Google that can be used on any platform; Windows, Mac, or Ubuntu/Linux. You can read more tips I have produced about Picasa by clicking here.
After you have installed Picasa, it will scan your hard drive for all your photos. If you have many years worth, it could take up to 15 minutes or so to finish the scan. Keep in mind that Picasa does not move your photos from their original locations. It merely presents you all of your photos in an easy to work with format.
Once the scan finishes, you can backup your photos by:
- Have your blank DVDs on hand. (CDs can be used, but takes 7 times the number of disks)
- Click Tools –> Backup Pictures from the menus
- Click the Select All button
- Click the Burn button and follow on-screen instructions
It will take approximately 5-6 minutes per DVD, so be patient. You will, however, sleep much better knowing your photos are backed up!
Great tip on using Picasa as a backup utility. I’ve been using Picasa for a while but never knew about this option.
Glad to help! Thanks for stopping by!!
