How to transfer photos from computer to a SD Card – Video Tip

One of my client’s today did not know how to transfer photos from her computer to a SD Card so she could utilize her digital picture frame she received at Christmas. She was amazed and relieved at how simple the steps were once I walked her through the process.

This method works for transferring any type of file from your computer to an external drive like a USB flash drive, external hard drive, or a memory card like shown here.

  1. Insert your memory card into the computer (or card reader…note too that newer digital cameras can act as a card reader as well)
  2. Click Start –> My Computer
  3. Double-click your memory card
  4. Click Start –>  My Pictures (Pictures in Vista and Windows 7)
  5. Position the two windows side-by-side (see video below or click here for complete tutorial on using the title bar)
  6. Drag photos from your Pictures folders to external drive (Learn how to select multiple files here or here.)

  1. Can you take the pictures off of an memory card in the same manner that you put them on? Or would you just delete them and add new ones?

    1. Mauricio Schneegans

Yes you can except that deleting the photos or any other file or files in the card is quicker specially if it some thing like puting pictures in a digital picture frame that you want put newer photos and delete the old ones

  2. I know how to put photos on the memory card. When I put the memory card into the slot on the HP printer, it does not allow the icon to stay on the desktop. It flashes on then disappears? is there something I am doing wrong or is it the memory card or the HP Photosmart Printer?

  3. This did not work for me. I am just a beginner and I followed your instructions.
When I put the SD card in my camera, the pictures I had highlighted and dragged on to my SD card were not on my SD card. The only pictures on my SD card are pictures I had taken while the SD card was in my camera. HOW DO I VIEW PICTURES TRANSFERRED FROM MY COMPUTER TO MY SD CARD? pLEASE HELP ME. i NEED TO KNOW HOW TO TRANSFER PICTURES FROM MY COMPUTER TO MY SD CARD AND BE ABLE TO VIEW THEM AND HAVE PRINTS MADE FROM MY SD CARD.

  4. Please help,

I accidentally erased my 2012 photos off my S D card. Luckily they are saved on an external hard drive. I have tried transferring them back to the sd card by dropping the file of photos into the f drive which takes approx 30 minutes 600plus photos including video 8GB card but when I go to look at them on the camera there are no photos. What am I doing wrong. Microsoft computer Windows 7

    1. Using this method is for storage and viewing on a computer only. Digital cameras format cards for their own use and look for photos in a specific folder (usually some form of DCIM). Put the card in another computer, and you will find the photos.

      1. Dear Rick,

Many thanks for the tip of tranferring photos from the external hard drive to the sd card, it certainly works when i insert the card in the photo frame but doesn’t seem to work on my Apple ipad

  5. Hi all:

I have a Samsung Galaxy III. My SD card became corrupted and I had to reformat the card. Luckily, my Google + had all of the 1000+ images backed up.

Question of the day…can I copy the images in Google + back to my SD card now that it is working again? If so, how? I also have a laptop if that helps, but was hoping I could send directly from my Google + app to my phone’s SD card.

    Many thanks,
    Megan

    1. Not easily, to my knowledge, Megan. You will have to go to Google+ and log in, then click the little men to the right of each album and click Download Album…then copy to your SD.

      Good luck.
