Major browser updates from Microsoft & Mozilla

In the past month, Microsoft released Internet Explorer 9 (Vista and Windows 7 only) and Mozilla released Firefox 4. Both browsers ratcheted up the speed and rendering of web pages, but both still contain some bugs that you don’t want to deal with yet. As with all major upgrades to any program, I always recommend sitting out on the hoopla for a couple of months or so.

This seems to be very applicable to these two upgrades.

Many reports of computer issues, program conflicts and other bugs have surfaced already for those brave souls who updated to Microsoft Internet Explorer 9. And my own experience with Firefox 4 has revealed that some sites (especially some secure banking or shopping sites) aren’t sure how to interact with Firefox.

If you already upgraded to either of these browsers, let me know what your experience has been by leaving a comment below. If you are having problems, use system restore to move your computer back to the previous version of the browser or uninstall via Programs and Features in the Control Panel.

  1. Rick already messed up and forgot my email..
I am having trouble getting to a financial inst. with Mozilla Firefox 3.6.16 and it started with 3.4xxxx, I can get to the institution with Internet Explorer and with Google Chrome so I need to use more Google Chrome… I will call today. Lon

  2. I bit on the lure of new versions again, updated both, had problems with Mozilla, deleted new version but there’s no old version to be found! There was something I didn’t like about the new IE too so I just use Chrome now and am happy with that. I would do the system restore but that was a couple weeks ago, don’t remember the date, and perhaps I don’t want to go that far back in my system settings? Would that revert other settings that I don’t want changed?

    1. Hi Linda. Thanks for the comment. You can safely go back a couple of weeks to undo those updates without losing any data. Your computer will require a catch up on any Windows updates and security updates installed, but that isn’t a major problem. Also, you can find older versions of Firefox for download at: download.com

  3. I am using Firefox 4 on Ubuntu. No problem with any of my financial sites so far (don’t know that I’ve been to them all). There are one or two minor (very) problems that go away when I restart Firefox. It happens seldom enough that I don’t consider it a reason to jump ship.

    1. Good to hear! I think it will be the best version of Firefox since version 2 once a few little minor items are ironed out. And they are already hard at work on version 5!

  4. I downloaded Firefox 4 and promptly started having problems with mymsn things. It would not show any financial things I had set up and would not let me go to the msn help page or several other things, so I went back to Firefox 3.6 and things were back to normal. I guess it takes a while to get the bugs out.

  5. Just a few days ago, I made the mistake of “upgrading” to Firefox 4 and have had at least five occasions of “Firefox crashes” always while composing email. Then I get the “Well, this is embarrassing” message with the option to restore or open a new window….the restore has always worked, but what a pain! I will probably “restore” one more time – system restore, that is!!!

    1. Strange that you are having problems with email, but it might also be due to some of your add-ons. Try disabling some of them and then use the browser as normal and see if that helps as well. Good luck.

  6. I’ve been having regular crashes with FireFox lately. I clicked on “Help”, “About Firefox”, and it says
“Firefox 15.0(?!). Firefox is up to date. You are currently on the release(??) update channel…” .
I don’t know what any of this means. Tho’t I had a one number version of Firefox (don’t remember the number, tho’) :-/ (Forgetful 70+ yr. brain filled to capacity w/very “profound” stuff) 😉
What do you know about it?

    1. Check your Firefox Add-Ons…they are usually the culprit. Click Tools ===> Add-ons and disable all of them and remove the ones you don’t want any longer. Also make sure you are running the most up to date Java and Adobe Flash Player.

  7. I have been having connectivity problems. I get knocked off frequently. I use Stelera and don’t know about the company being cause of this. I read in the paper that they owe thousands on property taxes in Delta County. ??? Have you heard anything? Should I be switching?
