I’m always amazed at how surprised computer users become when they learn about a keyboard shortcut. A keyboard shortcut is a combination of keys that you press on your keyboard to perform a particular function. If you learn them and practice them, they can shave hours off of the tedious maneuvering of the mouse.
These are my favorite and most used computer keyboard shortcuts:
Alt + TAB | Switch between Open Windows |
Windows key + E | Open Internet Explorer |
Windows key + M | Minimize all windows and show the desktop |
Ctrl + C | Copy |
Ctrl + V or Shift + Insert | Paste |
Arrow keys | To scroll pages and place my cursor |
TAB | Move between form fields (boxes) |
F2 | Rename a file or folder |
Ctrl + F | Usually on the web to search for a word on a page |
Windows key + R | Open the Run Command |
Here are a couple more tips that we have on the site regarding keyboard shortcuts; Windows Key & Extra Keys.
I’m always trying to use more keyboard shortcuts but I only seem to remember a couple. I recently learned Ctrl+Z to undo the last thing I did. This has been SO helpful – especially with WordPress.
At first, it was difficult for me too. I had one advantage that helped me learn: I have 4-5 clients who are totally blind so I have to teach them using shortcuts and learned from them. They get around a Windows PC faster than many of my sighted clients!! One quick Firefox or tabbed browsing shortcut that works well is Ctrl+Tab to toggle through open tabs!
In the list of keyboard shortcuts above “Widows key + E” brings up “My computer” or “Computer” and not “Internet Explorer”.
Thanks….and you are right…as listed, it comes up Windows Explorer which is different than Internet Explorer.
