AVG AntiVirus Upgrade

The calls are starting to ramp up wondering about AVG's messages regarding the discontinuation of their anti-virus. The message is a little alarming, but rest assured that AVG (Grisoft) is NOT going out-of-business and for home users the product will remain free. Although Grisoft is discontinuing support and updates for their current version, they have released a new version of their popular and highly effective program called AVG 7.5. No need to worry, just follow the steps below to continue receiving the best anti-virus protection available today.

Upgrading to AVG 7.5 is not too bad. If you are using a broadband Internet connection , the download will only take a few moments. If you are a dial-up customer, the download will take about one to two hours. Here are the directions for properly upgrading to the newest edition of AVG Antivirus:

  1. Download the AVG Free Edition 7.5 setup program (by clicking this link).
  2. Save this file on your hard drive (preferably the Desktop)
  3. When the download finishes, double-click the file to start the installation.
  4. Click "Next" on the AVG "Welcome!" screen
  5. Click "Accept" on the "License Agreement on Use of an AVG Free Edition" screen
  6. Select "Repair installation" on the "Select Setup Type" screen and click "Next"
  7. Select "Restart the computer now" (pre-selected by the program automatically) and click "OK" on the "Installation Complete!" screen to restart your computer and complete the installation
  8. Be sure to RIGHT Click the AVG icon by your clock and then Check for Updates as well once the computer restarts

That should do it. Most of your AVG settings (if you changed them) should remain the same, but you can check them by entering the AVG Control Center by double-clicking the AVG icon by your clock.

  1. Thought following your steps would be a cinch, but of course when I try to do something; it never fails I get pop-ups saying installation failed.

I currentlu have AVG free and since today is the day the 7.1 will no longer be good, I downloaded the 7.5. After going through the process, I get a pop up saying the installation failed because 7.1 is running the file.
Do I have to add/remove AVG7.1 and reinstall the 7.5?
    thanks, no such luck

  2. I am a home uses. I had 7.1 for which I paid on a two year license. when it expired I installed 7.5 free. At first I got a screen which said my avg will expire in 45 days. I clicked continue and it brought me to the 7.5 basic interface. Then I started getting messages, usage blocked by administrator when I clicked on AVG. That has recently gone away, and i am now back to a screen that says my avg free will expire in 20 days. I hit continue and it works like my paid AVG. What will happen in 20 days? Is the AVG free just for a limited period?

  3. These two files are constantly in use by Windows so AVG can't fully scan them because their structure changes, thus the message.

  4. I downloaded this system after I got the warnings in November that the AVG version I had would end.I succesfully downloaded the new version. Now when I scan I get 2 items In the Result/infection category, they both read Change. They are the kernel32.dll and the shell32.dll files. Is this a virus or any other promblem? Thank you for your help, Sincerely, Scott A. Moab, Utah

  5. Make sure you are choose repair when asked. If you are then try removing the old AVG from your computer.

I haven't seen this problem with any computers and I have done it dozens of times. It sounds like an unusual problem.

  6. This may be a dumb question, but here goes:

I just installed the free AVG 7.5 update, or so I thought—my computer’s Security Center indicates that virus protection is turned off, and suggests that I turn it on. How do I do this? Doesn’t the update automatically enable the virus protection? Please help!
    Thanks!

  7. Hi, grateful for any help that you can give.

I was running AVG 7 Free successfully until I needed to purchase a legitimate copy of Windows XP. Since adding the authorised copy of Windows XP, AVG does not function. I have tried deleting AVG completely from my computer wihtout success.

I get error messages like “Cannot delete AVGSCAN: Access is denied make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use” the other message is “Cannot delet AVG7log: it is being used by another person or program close any programs that might be using the file and try again”.

If I could just delete all reference to AVG and start again I would be more than happy.

    Thank you again.

  8. I guess I am the only one not completely satisfied with AVG. I had been using McAfee (SP???) and switched AVG 7.5. I paid for all of the services. Now my computer often runs at a snails pace. Any suggestions? Howard

  9. Hi all,

It’s not totally clear to me that AVG’s Free version has a fully functioning Anti-spyware component. Before I give them a call, Rick or Adam (or anyone else), can you confirm that it does detect, block and clean for spyware threats?

    Thanks!

    Karen Allen

  10. AVG Antispyware is separate product from the free antivirus. The antispyware product can be used for free, but will stop automatically scanning and updating after 30 days requiring the user to update and scan manually. The pay version will update and scan automatically.

This is totally different than the antivirus product which is fully functional free or paid…the only extra features for paid users of the antivirus product are tech support and the ability to have greater control over scans.

  11. Does AVG Free AntiVirus provide any antispyware protection?

I guess what I’m looking to answer is … if we want to fully protect our systems from virus’s, spyware and all other evil things lurking out there, is it best to buck up the annual $52 fee and load up the “pay for” AVG version?

    Thanks Rick,

    Karen

  12. No, AVG AntiVirus does not offer any antispyware protection.

Paying for the product is completely an individual decision. If you need tech support from the company, don’t think you will run scans and updates of the anti-spyware product on your own, then maybe paying for it is a good idea…but again, the anti-virus product ONLY protects against viruses. You would need to purchase the anti-spyware product as well.

  13. I’ve been running this perfectly for ages. All of a sudden it won’t download the updates and says the server name cannot be converted to the IP address. Bein a bit of a computer dinosaur I don’t know what to do! Help!

  14. hi, just downloaded 7.5 and proceeded to get it to update, the update screen pops up for a second or two then an error screen is displayed saying “an error has occurred during the update process and the process cannot be completed”. any idea why? cheers

  15. I paid for SpywareBot and for some sort of registry cleaner. But AVG is a pain.
Error pops up “cannot delete” AVG!
    Wha . .?

If I tell it to, why not? Hopefully, you found a way
    to do that.

    Waiting hopefully for an answer,

    Thanks,

  16. You were duped into paying for a product that is actually the cause of your problems. You need to uninsntall SpywareBot, unintstall AVG, then reinstall AVG and other legitimate products we recommend here at HelpMeRick.com and clean your system up. Good luck.

  17. I use AVG Free edition and every day I get a pop-up from AVG telling me to upgrade to the “pay” version. How can I stop these annoying pop-ups please. If I want to upgrade I will ask and I don’t need to see this unwanted Spam – especially when it’s coming from AVG? Any advise would be very welcome. John!

  18. AVG is simply trying to convert some of their free customers into paying ones. It is still completely legit and recommended for home users to continue with AVG Free. I think the advertisements from AVG will subside once the new car smell of their new version wears off.

  19. There is actually a new free version as well – go and check at free.grisoft.com. Now includes spyware detection as well as the LinkScanner technology in the new SearchShield component. Installing the new version should remove the popups.

  20. I have tried to uninstall my free AVG. I thought it was successful but it is still on my system. When I go back into control panel to remove the program I get this error message: Installer initialization failed due to following error:

Error: Initialization of the language file “C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG7” failed. General failure.

How do I completely remove AVG from my computer if I cannot do it through my control panel?

  21. the link at the top of the page to get the 7.5 avg when you click it it goes to 8.0 which is it ???? and what is the link to the 7.5 as I have win 98 ??
